Title: Pretense
Rating: PG for safety
Prompt: #5, Healing
Summary: He stares dully at the ceiling, because he knows he can’t ever return to the active duty rolls for a Knight of the Realm.
His arm is in a sling, and he is informed he might never walk again without a limp. He stares dully at the ceiling, because he knows he can’t ever return to the active duty rolls for a Knight of the Realm.
His sword lies at the side of his bed. They’ve cleaned it, informed him he’s brought home a Crown purse and a commendation for the King for his courage. He says nothing. What is the point of being a hero who saved the entire company of soldiers, who cleared the way for Lord Wyldon to save the King’s offspring?
He is a broken hero, never a whole man again. He will never wield his sword again in defense of justice, the weak, and the realm.
He will be lucky if he can ever ride again.
He will be lucky if his leg ever stops hurting in shivers of bone-deep agony.
Soon, he is discharged, and he returns home, sitting awkwardly on a horse that fared better than him. His younger brother says nothing, but puts an arm around him, both of them walking in step together, swords at their side.
With Inness, and with his wife, and the eager young faces of his children, Sir Anders of Mindelan thinks that sometimes, life feels perfectly normal.
He pretends that life is perfectly fine and normal, or at least he thinks he does. And sometimes, when he holds his family in his arms, he thinks it’s no pretense.
