Title: A Surprising Blow Summary: As the King's squire, he'd only been average at best. Kel's about to learn first-hand how much better he's gotten. Rating: PG Length: 147 words Genre: Er... General? Slight shippyness. Jousting, if that counts as a genre. Series: Post-PotS Warnings: None. Author's Notes: First TP fic I've written in aaaages. For May, who requested "Kel/Zahir 'be fair'" over at the LJ Prompt Meme. It should have been a drabble, but I wasn't going to get fussy while I'm still unused to this fandom. Cross-posted at LJ. -- Reeling in the saddle, Kel thought: Goddess, the rumours were true - he's gotten good at this! Then she was gasping for breath - lungs too tight under breastplate and leather - ears ringing - spots in her vision - Peachblossom stomping angrily – She flung off her helm. Hot dust clogged the air. At the far end of the tiltyard, Zahir threw his shattered lance to the ground. And when - and how - had he gotten so good? 'Another bout?' he called confidently. Goddess no! Kel thought, pulling air into her burning lungs. She hadn't been hit so hard in ages. Her hesitation must have shown, because he laughed. Malice? Goodwill? - She couldn't tell. 'Be fair,' he said. 'It was time someone beat you at something.' Kel straightened in her saddle. Tobe was already there, offering her lance and helm. She took both. Down the jousting alley, Zahir grinned at her. 'Peachblossom -- charge!' ---

Oooh, I really like this! Zahir gets overlooked by the fandom in many ways (except by Kel/Zahir shippers) - and I like the concept becasue Kel's always been the best at jousting; it's nice to have someone who could potentially best her! ;D

Ooh! I like this a lot! I love the descriptions and the way you write this, it's like you can definitely feel the pain Kel experiences and taste the dirt in the air. It's really cool.
Awesome drabble/fic. ^^

Thanks guys! To be honest Lisa, I'd never really paid much attention to Zahir before. I flipped through PotS before writing this so that I had something to work with - but even so that something isn't a lot. Ana - I'm glad you thought the descriptions worked because I struggled to get it to flow/get everything in, in so few words.

Fantastic! I love Zahir, I really thought that Tammy didn't explore him enough! This fic makes me happy And you did very well on the descriptions and creating the atmosphere...
