Title: Cinnamon for Midwinter Rating: PG Summary: Evin, just back in Corus and brain too tired to work, smells something funny on the wind. A/N: Prompt from Gem (Fox)- ‘cinnamon and scarlet’.
Not unusually for the Rider barracks, there was a funny smell on the breeze. Evin sniffed suspiciously, and after a few moments, his tired brain recognised it. “Cinnamon,” he said, sounding baffled, and swung off his pony, wincing as his feet hit the ground. “Why cinnamon?”
Commander Buri dismounted. Group Askew, Nightbreath and Gret’s Shadows had just got back into the capital after weeks of slogging through mud, slush and snow; their scarlet tunics were bespattered and grimy. “It’s Midwinter, you fool.”
“Oh!” Evin said, feeling stupid, and suddenly remembered Midwinters at home: cinnamon, sweets, decorations and presents. “Of course.”

Yay, Rider fic! (Nitpick: Aren't the Riders' tunics brown, canonically?)

I recall a bit in Squire where Kel describes them as brown - I'll cite it for you, just because text citations are awesome. - pg. 66, Random House paperback - the Joyce Patti cover. I'm positive there's a description at some point in TIQ, as well: - ROTG, pg. 254, Simon Pulse paperback. I think there are other parts of TIQ describing it as brown too, but ROTG was the book I had handy. Description of the emblem: - Wild Magic, pg. 78, Random House paperback - again with the Joyce Patti cover. /dork. I'm not trying to make you feel bad/stupid/otherwise, May. I just went: "wait... the Riders don't wear red, do they?" and then "yay, Rider fic!"

Ack, May! I didn't realise you had posted it!! *headdesk* But, yay, Rider fic! It was lovely: cute, and fun. I love Evin being so weary he's forgotten it's Midwinter, and I can just imagine Buri being grumpy from weeks of winter riding. As far as the scarlet vs. brown tunics go... artistic licence? Maybe it's a new uniform, or they were on some sort of special mission that required posher outfits (representing the crown at something)? *shrugs* Thank you!
