Review - Bones of Faerie
by Aurorax
Title: Bones of Faerie
Author: Janni Lee Simner
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
In a future world following the war between humans and faeries, the inhabitants of Franklin Falls do what they need to to survive in a dangerous world. They have learned once more to hunt with knife and bow, now that the modern planes and cars of Before have been reduced to twisted piles of scrap metal.
But most of all, they have learned to follow the rules- to never walk alone at night, to avoid the shadows that hung at the edges of darkness, and most importantly to cast out magic before it could cause any harm.
Liza has grown up knowing the importance of the rules. But when Liza's father leaves her baby sister, whose pale hair and silver eyes bore the mark of faery magic, to die alone upon a hillside, and her mother mysteriously disappears, her life is changed forever. And when she starts to see the signs of magic in herself, Liza knows that she must leave her home forever.
Together with a young shapeshifter, she sets off to rescue her mother from the land of Faery, the secret world of magic across the Arch. Along the way, she must learn more about the War and her own growing power. Because she is the only one with the power to save her mother, herself, and her world, if she can find a way to accept that magic can save as well as destroy.
While the storyline isn't the most original in recent memory, the beauty of this novel lies in its chilling descriptions of a world so different from our own, where butterflies burst into flame and piles of bone litter the ground. Though I was left wishing for a more in-depth picture of the post-War world, the heroine's spunk and resourcefulness made up for a lot of the missing background. Liza's journey serves as a powerful reminder of what we take for granted in daily life, making this a short but thought-provoking read that's definitely worth a look.
