Series: Son of Carthak Title: Midwinter Melancholia Rating: PG-13 Event: Midwinter Musings Words: 200 Summary: Every Midwinter, Binur’s mother misses her homeland.
Midwinter Melancholia
Every Midwinter, Binur’s mother was overcome by melancholia. Mourning and missing her homeland.
Over the years, she told Binur stories of how she had spent childhood Midwinters in Tortall. Skating on the frozen Olorun with her siblings. Building snowmen with them. Throwing snowballs at each other in wintery warfare. Munching on warm gingerbread afterward. Sipping hot cider by a cackling fire.
“I wish I could visit Tortall for just one Midwinter,” he murmured to her one year when the melancholia claimed her. “Skate along the Olorun. Taste the snowflakes on my tongue.”
“You do not. It would shatter your heart like an icicle. Melt it like snow in the sun.” She shook her head. Sighed. As if her own heart had been broken. When she had left Tortall, sailing for Carthak, and again, now. Remembering the pain of that separation.
“Do you wish you’d never come here?” Binur asked. His own heart cracking like ice.
“I left behind my family and friends–everyone I had ever known and loved–when I came to Carthak.” Mother bent over him. Kissed his forehead indulgently. “But I do not regret coming here. I was able to make a new family–new memories–with your father and you.”

Kally:( This is so sweet. Thank you so much for reading and commenting! Kally broke my heart writing this piece. I definitely headcanon her as getting homesick for Tortall and the family and friends she had growing up there during the holidays but at the same time she loves Kaddar and Binur and the life she has built in Carthak. So it is complicated but sweet and I am so happy that sweetness shone through in this little story!
