Title: Lessons of Freedom Rating: PG-13. Word Count: 34 Summary: Shinko and the lessons of freedom she learns and teaches. Notes: Written for mistrali’s prompt “Freedom.” Thanks to mistrali for the inspiration. I nickname Roald and Shinko’s daughter Lian in this since I prefer that to Tammy’s Liano. Lessons of Freedom One of the first lessons Shinko’s mother taught her was that a princess was never free, but when she had a daughter of her own, she did not pass this bitter teaching onto Lian.

I love it! I like to imagine that Roald, in particular, is a lot softer on (and more supportive of/reasonable with) Lian than Jon was with Kally.

mistrali, thank you so much for reading and commenting! I'm so glad you loved this story since I enjoyed reflecting on the difference of how Shinko might have been brought up with how Shinko and Roald bring up Lian. I think that the fact that Lian is the heir to the Tortallan throne and will one day be queen in her own right means that she will be raised quite differently to how Kally was. Since I suspect there was the undercurrent of Kally being one day married off to another realm/country influencing how she was parented. For all intents and purposes, Jon was raising Kally to be married off to someone else (which is basically traditional medieval parenting of daughters) whereas Lian is going to be raised to be something much more radical: an heir and queen of Tortall in her own right. I actually think Roald and Lian are well-positioned to have a really unique and special relationship. Because Roald will be raising her as his heir from the time she is born and the fact that it is not a father/son dynamic makes me think that there might be less potential for friction/tension to develop between them, and for there to be a lot of support and affirmation. So I really like to picture Roald and Lian having a special bond where he is very supportive and encouraging of her and she one hundred percent knows that he has her back. And I think Shinko is also a massive influence on her as well and that she inherits a lot of Shinko's grace and political acumen as well. At least that is my glorious head canon.
