Very bittersweet. Leaving the rest of her family behind when she moved to Tortall must’ve been hard. In this age of cheap flights, we tend to forget how laborious a journey by ship would’ve been.

mistrali Thank you so much for reading and commenting! This story was very bittersweet for me to write, because I could imagine how hard it would be for Shinko to leave her brother and everything she has ever known behind in the Yamani Islands even if I did know that her marriage to Roald would end up being a happy one for her. In the modern world, we have the advantage of cheap flights that make travel between distant lands much more feasible, but in a time when travel was much more difficult, it must have been even scarier to leave home for a strange, distant land for what might be forever. So it was definitely interesting to explore that dimension of Shinko's journey in this single sentence story.
