Title: Dates and Water Rating: PG Word Count: 32 Summary: Zahir contemplates sustenance. Notes: Written for mistrali’s prompt “Sustain.” Thanks to mistrali for the inspiration. Dates and Water Struggling not to choke on the strange northern food, Zahir remembered nibbling on a date as his father taught him that a man could survive for years on dates and water alone.

I like this contrast between the northern food and Zahir’s thoughts of the sparse desert fare. I’m sure Zahir would’ve been homesick.

mistrali, thank you so much for reading and commenting! Food is such a part of our daily lives (we need it to survive) and so tied to our culture and society that I think it can often be one of the first things a person misses about their home when they move somewhere else, and so that's why I had it be a big symptom of Zahir's homesickness here. The northern food seems so strange to him, so he longs for the fare he grew up eating in the desert.
