Title: Shadows at Sunset Rating: PG-13 for general spookiness. Word Count: 55 Summary: At sunset, Jon watches the Black City.
Shadows at Sunset
At dusk in the Sunset Room, Jon stared out at Black City as hundreds of Voices before him had done and wondered if he and Alanna had truly banished the shadows from that dread place or if a century from now some brave Bazhir children would have to ride out to defeat the Ysandir again.

I liked this one! See, this would’ve made a lot more sense in canon, on several levels.
Not only does it eliminate the white-saviour plot point of Jon and Alanna being the Night One and the Burning Brightly One (plus, Alanna is explicitly the chosen of a white goddess), it also ties these particular Ysandir irrevocably to the desert. I don’t think two eleven-year-olds, no matter what divine aid they received, could have defeated them with the Tortallan Gift.
It only really makes sense for the land itself to revolt against them, and for the land you need Bazhir styles of magic. A takedown using the sort of ambient style of magic displayed by the Bazhir would have worked a lot better.

mistrali, thank you so much for reading and commenting! I'm so glad that you like this one, and think it would've made more sense in canon. The white-savior element of Jon and Alanna being the Night One and the Burning Brightly One has rubbed me the wrong way for years especially because the Ysandir were first confined to Black City by the Bazhir magic and the Bazhir built Persopolis and the Sunset Room to keep watch over the Ysandir. So I see no compelling reason why Bazhir couldn't be the ones to achieve what Jon and Alanna did. I also must admit that I found the Ysandir fascinating and was kind of disappointed that we didn't get to see more of them as enemies and that we didn't get to learn more about their history, so I like to toy with the idea of them maybe not being defeated and coming back as a threat again. So I like to imagine that maybe in the future it will be the Bazhir who finally destroy the Ysandir for good with their unique style of magic and connection to the desert.
