I reckon that’s what his ethos would be, yeah. This is a great fusion of the Tortallan (sheep) with the Bazhir (making sure everyone is together and safe).

mistrali, thank you for reading and for the kind words! Last time I read Woman Who Rides like a Man, I really found myself appreciating Halef as a character more than ever, and I do find the tribal structure of the Bazhir interesting in that it seems to be more democratic than the Tortallan approach since I get the sense that every man has a right to be heard around the fire in Bazhir tribes, but in Tortall, it is mostly the nobles and other high-ranking folks that have the right to speak up, and everyone else largely goes unheard. So I thought it would be interesting to explore Halef's leadership philosophy and how he sees himself as sort of a guide to his people and someone responsible for ensuring that they are safe and united. Really I just find Bazhir culture and characters fascinating in general. I don't think I'll ever get tired of writing about them since there is so much to delve into with the Bazhir!
