Title: Flickering Jack o’ Lantern Rating: PG-13 for references to death. Word Count: 31 Summary: A jack o’ lantern reminds Raoul of Francis. Notes: I’ve had the sudden urge to write Raoul/Francis fic, so that’s what I’m going to do. Also known as Part 1 in my Autumn Memories of Francis series.
Flickering Jack o’Lantern
Raoul watched flames flicker orange in the jack o’ lantern and remembered last All Hallow’s Eve when he and Francis had carved pumpkins together, their fingers touching around the same knife.

I love how the vibe of this piece is both intimate and foreboding!

wordy, thank you so much for reading and commenting! I'm so happy to hear that you loved the vibe of this piece since I really wanted it to have an atmospheric feeling to it, and that can sometimes be hard to capture, especially in only one sentence. There can definitely be something foreboding about flickering candles in a jack o'lantern and about All Hallow's Eve in general, so I definitely wanted to include that element in this story, but at the same time, I hoped to showcase that intimacy in Raoul's memory of carving a jack o'lantern with Francis the previous year. It really interests me how a tone can sort of shift throughout even one sentence. OSW always makes me focus so much on the power of a few words to communicate a lot of emotion.
