Title: Rice Jelly Rating: G Words: 32 (yikes!) Notes: This is pure headcanon (because I like ants. And dessert ). Apparently pandan rice jelly is a thing... which is close to what I imagined with this. Not exactly a wonder, though, unless you’re a visiting foodie diplomat, I suppose. Aracen ants, fermented, produce a spicy-citrus taste the raka favour in their liquor; the material of their nests, crushed into a black-purple powder and mixed with glutinous rice, makes a sweet rice jelly.

I feel like I can taste the "spicy-citrus" flavor and sweet rice jelly as well as feel the glutinous rice and see the black-purple powder. This sentence was a sensory experience in every way, and I do like this fantasy, Copper Isles take on some of the glutinous rice type dishes that exist in our own world. I like that sort of creative world-building to give a vivid sense of setting.

Thank you! I wanted to focus on more senses than just sight for these worldbuilding fics. I find myself more and more interested in the Isles’ geography while writing these little snippets.

The Copper Isles are such an interesting place that I'm so glad that you're exploring the setting more in your stories, and I think it's wonderful that you're focused on using more senses than just sight for world-building because so much can be conveyed through the smells, tastes, and sounds of a place.

Pandan jelly is delicious, and I really enjoyed how this sounds like it could come out from a tourist's guide to Kypriang. Really, this series has a 'Lonely Planet Guide to Kypriang' feel to it, and I love it!

Seek - Thank you - I’m glad you’re enjoying the series. Hah! Maybe I should retitle it that. I’m getting the giggles at the idea of Dove, or Edgecliff or someone, writing a Lonely Planet-style guidebook for the Isles. There must be plenty of accounts of visitors to Carthak; maybe not so many for the Isles, at least in the last three or four decades, particularly with the civil war happening. Plus it’s not exactly the trade hub that Carthak or Tyra is. Hopefully as Dove opens trade, we’ll get to see more visiting (non-Tortallan) politicians. I actually had tapioca pearls in mind at first, so maybe it’s closer to that. A leaf like pandan would probably be more fitting for ants’ nests, but considering that they have jaguars and probably trade heavily with Carthak, cassava or some similar plant isn’t out of the realm of possibility either. Taro could also work, or it could just be a fantasy plant. I’ve never tried pandan jelly (that I recall). It only came up when I googled rice jelly after writing the fic.
