Title: Cleansed Rating: G Event: Goldenlake 2020 Triathlon (Winter/Summer) Words: 141 Summary and Warnings: A contemplative moment on Polyam’s travels.
The Sea of Grass, Namorn-Yanjing border, the thirtieth day of Hearth Moon, 1036 K.F.
The water was icy, this far north: clear and clean, fed by mountain-stream meltwater. They saw innumerable wild horses, the occasional herd of yak, and a settlement or two, but for the most part, nothing but pasture for miles around. The grass was velvet underfoot, and the ground reassuringly firm: no chance of landslides.
Polyam stayed out late, long past sunset, and breathed it in deep; this was cold as she’d known it from childhood, growing up in a Trader city in northern Lairan. The open space chimed her isolation back at her in crystalline harmonies, struck it like a gong, raising echoes; she felt at one with the landscape and the silence, instead of dwarfed by them. The feeling purified her, more than any qunsuanen ever had.

A beautiful, contemplative piece. There's a great sense of setting to this piece with the icy water fed by mountain stream meltwater and the herds of the yak. I love the poetic details you laced throughout, especially the description of the grass as "velvet underfoot." I really felt as if I were exploring the landscape with Polyam.
And then to have Polyam inhale the landscape and find herself not only reflected in it but somehow purified in it was wonderful.
Thank you for sharing!

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it, and particularly that you got a strong sense of the setting. I think Polyam deserves some peace after her experiences in FitF! I’ve edited that last bit for clarity

This is lovely and evocative writing. I particularly like the contrast between the cold and the icy water here, and the fire and heat from Polyam's only canon appearance. It makes me think of things coming full circle, which, to me, supports the feeling of peace Polyam has here.
Also congrats on finishing your first triathlon!

That’s a lovely thought about the heat/cold contrast. I was only thinking about having Polyam prefer the cold in contrast to Daja, and having a different setting to play around with (ignoring most of BM, which I usually do in fic).
