Series: The Warm Heart of Winter
Title: The Most Generous Gift
Rating: PG.
Event: Wicked in Winter-The Gift that Keeps Giving.
Words: 200.
Summary: Shinko, Roald, and the most generous gift a wife can give her husband.
The Most Generous Gift
“Do you know the most generous gift a wife can give her husband—a gift that keeps on giving?” Shinko asked late on a cold winter’s night as she cuddled little Lianokami snugly against her breast. Roald’s arm was wrapped around her in turn, holding her and Lianokami close to his warm chest so Shinko could feel in every heartbeat how much he loved her and their baby.
“The most generous gift a wife can give her husband is herself.” Roald kissed her forehead gently as a whisper.
“No.” Shinko shook her head, ink-black hair falling over her tiny daughter, who snatched at it with small fists and sharp reflexes. Patiently extracting it from Lianokami’s clutches, Shinko smiled down at her gloriously strong, healthy baby. “The most generous gift a wife can give her husband is children, who in time will provide children and grandchildren to continue his line. Children are the gift that keeps on giving.”
“I think both answers to your riddles are perfectly acceptable.” Roald was determined to find a diplomatic middle path in this as in all else.
“Very well.” Shinko gazed at her husband with a loving twinkle in her eyes. “We’re both right.”

This is a very cute and cosy fic! I like the similarities between this and your recent Roald/Lianne fic, what complimentary pairs they both make. Very much looking forward to seeing what you do with Shinko this series!

Agreed, this is really cute! Also an interesting contrast in how Shinko and Roald were raised.

I adore <3 <3 <3
The compromise they come to is beautiful, even if I happen to agree with Roald in this instance.

I think I also agree with Roald's view more, but I like how you've shown their interaction and Shinko being forthright about her own view - it's a great contrast to how she initially viewed her future relationship with Roald and shows how far both of them have come with each other since that first memorable party.

Rosie , thank you so much for commenting. I felt all warm inside as I wrote this story, so it makes me so happy to know that it ended up creating a story that was cozy and cute as you say since that was exactly what I hoped this would be Roald/Shinko and Roald/Lianne are two of my favorite couples for sweet romance, so that is probably why some similarities end up working their way into my writing of these two pairings, but I do love to imagine a less tragic and happier ending for Roald/Shinko than for Roald/Lianne. How Roald/Lianne ended can break my heart. I'm so glad that you're looking forward to more Shinko stories, and I hope that I can do her character justice! Tamari , thank you so much for commenting I'm so glad you found this story cute. I always find it interesting to explore the contrasts in how Shinko and Roald were raised and how that impacts their worldviews, so I'm so happy you found that interesting to read about in this piece. mistrali , I'm so flattered that you adored this story, and found the compromise they came to beautiful. I always picture Roald/Shinko as a couple capable of coming to beautiful compromises since they both seem to have that nature that would make compromise come easy to them. But I admit that I agree more with Roald in this as well. Kypriotha I think I side more with Roald as well, but I do love the idea of Shinko becoming comfortable with sharing her thoughts and views with Roald over time, and, you're right that shows so much growth for their relationship compared to the party in Squire where they are both so unable to engage in anything beyond polite, surface level conversation. I like to think of Roald/Shinko as a happy couple, and it can be hard to find happiness without some amount of forthrightness
