Crown Duel and Court Duel by Sherwood Smith (two books but available in one volume) is awesome. Great blend of action and court politics that actually deals with the aftermath of revolution that many stories don't have the guts to confront. An engaging female heroine and lots of different female characters in various roles. Lovely YA feminist fantasy.
Madeleine L'Engel's books Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters, and An Acceptable Time are more science-fiction than fantasy but deal with the struggles of growing up and daring to be a nonconformist. Classic books that still feel contemporary and remind us of the value of being independent in our thinking.
The Arthur Trilogy (The Seeing Stone, At the Crossing Places, and King of the Middle Marsh) by Kevin Crossley-Holland are excellent reads that mix Arthurian legend with actual events of the Middle Ages like the Crusades in a very creative way. Lots of knighthood training stuff that will remind readers of Alanna's and Kel's experiences as pages and squires. The protagonist is a male character, but there was an effort to include female characters with different personalities in a variety of roles. Gerald Morris's retellings of Arthurian legend for teens (beginning with the Squire's Tale) are also fun.
The Wild Orchid: A Retelling of the Ballad of Mulan by Cameron Dokey is a fun read for those who would like another story of a woman hiding her identity to fight a la Alanna. Also cool to read a story set in ancient China.

Seconding Crown Duel and Court Duel, for the reasons mentioned. So glad someone else enjoyed those books. I read my copy (I was lucky enough to buy them in one volume) so many times it got tattered, and I had to get a new one. If my book tatters, it's a sure sign that I loved it.

For adult fantasy, I recommend The Novels of the Twelve Houses by Sharon Shinn. Senneth, one of the main characters, gives me some Alanna and Sabine vibes and Tayse and Justin make me think of a mix of The King's Own and the Riders. Plus there's magic, romance and political intrigue.

I've been looking for decent adult fantasy, I'll give the Novels of the Twelve Houses a shot. For adult fantasy, I have to recommend the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams. The books are doorstoppers but very well-written with what is in my opinion the best world-building I've encountered in fantasy and a take on elves superior to Tolkien's.
