Do you have any comfort rereads or books that you've read a lot but still curl up with when times are tough and you need something to cheer you up?
Most of my comfort rereads are children's or young adult books that I loved when I was younger such as the Harry Potter books and the Chronicles of Narnia series in addition to Tammy's SOTL and POTS books. How about you? Do you also tend to reread childhood favorites for comfort in difficult times, or do you have other books that you turn to for consolation? Or do you prefer new books for distraction or excitement when facing difficulties?

My comfort re-read is Percy Jackson. I don't know what it is about those books that just make me so damn happy.

My comfort re-read is Percy Jackson. I don't know what it is about those books that just make me so damn happy. Ah, the Percy Jackson books. I've heard so many great things about them from so many people, but surprisingly for someone who is interested in Greco-Roman mythology, I have never gotten around to reading them. I really should make a point of reading them, though, since they sound like they would be perfect books for me. Sometimes it is hard to know exactly what makes us happy about a comfort reread. There may be things in the story itself--the setting, the characters, the humor, or the happy ending, whatever it is--but some of it, at least for me, is also the memories I have of reading the books and enjoying them. That's why it can be hard for me to add new books even those I love to my comfort rereads since I don't have the long history of reading them that seems essential for me in a comfort reread. Perhaps something similar happens with you and the Percy Jackson books.

Ever since I started working on my own novels on the side, I can't read any novels for comfort. Instead I... have a few terribly adolescent fandoms (not TP) where I can just sit and re-read trashy adolescent fanfics instead There's just something about a teenager trying their best that makes me inspired to try my best too!

Most recently, Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. It reminds me of my love for fanfiction! I also love a lot of fanfics, so there's that...

It would probably remind me of myself a lot too since I have a tendency to be an obsessive fan of things like Star Wars and Harry Potter.

My go-to comfort book is usually Sense and Sensibility, whether reading or listening to an audiobook. Sharon Shinn's Novels of the Twelve Houses are next in line (usually starting with the last, Fortune and Fate).

Mine is primarily Pride & Prejudice, but I also have a couple of books that either close friends have given me or that I pilfered from my sister, and there’s a comfort in the connection. Otherwise I cycle through rereads based on my moods. kitsunerei88 , have you read Rainbow Rowell’s Carry On? I am excited for Wayward Son.

Wow, Sense and Sensibility and Pride Prejudice are impressive comfort reads. I admit that my comfort rereads tend to be a lot simpler and more connected to positive childhood memories and emotions.
Never read Sharon Shinn's Twelve Houses books, but I love how I am getting so many good titles to add to my to-read list from this thread!

Comfort rereads for me include stuff from my childhood like Ella Enchanted and The Thief. I really don't have too much recent books that I find comforting.

I admit I didn't like it as much - part of it is that I definitely see myself in the protagonist for Fangirl because I am also anxious and I am also currently writing nearly 30K words of fanfiction a month which is... umm... a little ridiculous.

The main comfort reads I turn to are usually Protector of the Small or Circle of Magic.
My biggest comfort read is probably Anne of Green Gables, but it is almost impossible for me to read just the first book - I always want to read the whole series - so I won't always choose it as a comfort read if I want something quicker with a smaller commitment.

MythicMistress, I love Ella Enchanted. I haven't read it in awhile but it was a book I used to check out of the library all the time. I think it is my favorite variation on the Cinderella fairy tale. Glad someone else here has gotten enjoyment out of Ella Enchanted. Kypriotha, Anne of Green Gables is a great series. I'm like you, though, I can't just read one book in the series. I have to read them all so I don't end up doing re-reads of them that often but I always will have a soft spot in my heart for Anne of Green Gables.

Oh, Pride and Prejudice is definitely a comfort read for me too.
Howl's Moving Castle is another one.

Or wildly impressive! I liked the characters in Fangirl better (Cath is so delightful, and makes a great protagonist), but I really loved the idea of words/phrases of power in the Simon Snow verse.

Idleness, Diana Wynne Jones has written some very fun books. I do remember enjoying her books when I was growing up.

This makes me want to reread Fangirl! I loved that book. My comfort rereads for the past several years have been Tamora Pierce, hence throwing myself full force into this fandom. But I just recently reread some of my old American Girl books and that was really fun to revisit.
