It struck me while rereading quickly how big of a part Achoo becomes as a driving force from when we first see her with Phelan in Terrier.
So, where would Beka be without Achoo? Would she still have been as well known a Dog, or risen through the ranks?

Excellent question, Rachy. You are right that Achoo was a major part of Beka's successes in Bloodhound and Mastiff. It is super interesting to think about how her life might have been different if she hadn't stepped in to save Achoo from the abusive handler in charge of her after Phelan resigned from the Dogs. She certainly wouldn't have had the success that she did tracking Pearl in Bloodhound without Achoo (and that earned her a medal and a purse from the Crown) nor would she have been been assigned by Lord Gershom to investigate Prince Gareth's disappearance without Achoo (or at least that's what Lord Gershom's comments on the matter lead me to believe). Rescuing Prince Gareth was probably a huge part of her legacy, and without Achoo she likely wouldn't have even had that opportunity.
I don't think Beka would have been catapulted to such great success or given such significant opportunities without Achoo, and she might not have been able to go down in history without Achoo. I do believe that she would have still been a famous Dog in her lifetime without Achoo from her connections with her spinners, her pigeons, and her cat-god constellation Pounce as well as her understanding of the Lower City environment. I thought that she was well on the way to earning a name for herself by the end of Terrier without too much assistance from Achoo. I don't know if she would necessarily have done enough to be remembered centuries and generations later by Eleni Cooper as a famous ancestress without Achoo, though. It just shows how one seemingly small choice can influence a character's destiny. I love considering forks in the road for characters like this.

I just realized that at the very beginning of the series, when Eleni shows George the little statuette of Beka, it's of her and Pounce. Not Achoo. So it may be that her "legend" doesn't feature Achoo that prominently, even though the hound was crucial to some of her famous successes... |

I guess Pounce would be more memorable to history as a constellation god. I suppose to be historically accurate Beka's statuette would've had to include a mini menagerie what with Pounce, Achoo, and her pigeons, ha ha. |
