devilinthedetails and I touched on this in another thread, but who do you see Roald choosing for various positions once he is king? There obviously wouldn't need to be such a wholesale 'changing of the guard', but many are Jon's contemporaries, and might feel the need to step down for one reason or another. Also, I'm choosing to ignore that Roald would probably go for much more pragmatic choices, but if that's how you feel, then you can opt for that. Training Master Spy Master King's Champion Prime Minister Knight Commander of the King's Own I think Tammy has mentioned somewhere that Kel could step into the latter role, so I'm going to start off by flagging her up for it. I've always liked the idea of Owen as King's Champion, though he could easily also suit Training Master. And I mentioned in the other thread that Douglass could be Spy Master, since in quasi-canon, he's had spy-training, though Alan of Pirate's Swoop would also be an option. Neal would have to be a cantankerous Duke of Queenscove. I can't picture him in a diplomatic role, he hasn't got the patience to train others, and hasn't got the skill to be Chief Healer, though he would have some of George's connections, so maybe some kind of spy role?? What are your thoughts?

This thread is going to be fun since it's a chance to let our imaginations run wild. I do love that blank slate aspect of what Roald's reign would be like so that's why even though I love Roald, I hope that Tammy leaves the future unexplored so we can invent our own answers like this. I agree there wouldn't necessarily have to be a wholesale changing of the guard, which could be good since it could give some of Roald's contemporaries a chance to grow into roles or be groomed for them. In some cases, it could be more of a gradual transfer of power.
It is true that Roald strikes me as the type of person who might go for more pragmatic or diplomatic options especially since I've always had the impression that he doesn't want to be seen as favoring his friends but those options are probably characters we haven't met yet, so I'd rather focus on the candidates that we do know.
Training Master: I think that Padraig haMinch could probably stay in this role for awhile (which I am okay with, since he seemed very qualified in Spy Guide) and then a replacement being appointed when he wants to resign. At that point, I could see Kel in this role since she seems to enjoy teaching young people how to fight but I prefer her as Knight Commander of the Own, so I'll nominate Owen. I just think Owen has this sort of boundless enthusiasm for everything related to being a knight, so he could instill a lot of passion in people he trains. He's also such a brave and honorable person that I imagine he would be a great example for the next generation of knights. He's also someone like Kel who I could picture actually dealing with the hazing in a healthy way to make it hopefully not acceptable at all. I've always liked that Owen seemed inclined to not be ashamed about speaking up about bullies. He might even seem like a reasonable compromise option since conservatives might be okay with him since he was Wyldon's squire.
Spy Master: Why not Douglass to keep Rosie happy? Aly could be an option here, but I imagine her work for the Copper Isles would disqualify her from being Tortall's Spy Master. She might have a role in Tortall's spy network, but I don't know if she would ever be trusted to lead it. It would be cool to see more women in positions of power during Roald's reign, though.
King's Champion: I'll shamelessly plug Zahir for this role since he always seemed like a good fighter to me, and I'd love to see Bazhir in positions of power and generally being more integrated into Tortallan society. I'd also consider Neal for this post since he seems to have learned well from Alanna based on what Kel says about his swordfighting in Lady Knight, but I prefer to imagine Neal taking over for his father as a Chief Healer even if he doesn't have the university training.
Prime Minister: I think Neal is smart enough for this role and has the family name that would be palatable to conservatives but I worry he might not be diplomatic enough for the post with his near constant sarcasm plus in my head I have him busy as Chief Healer. Maybe someone like Faleron (who seems to have a calm disposition Roald might like to work with and seems to come from an old family) would be appropriate or perhaps Jasson (Roald's brother). Tammy's quasi-canon made me think of Jasson as being very intelligent and bookish.
Knight Commander of the King's Own: I'd love Kel in this position. She could break another gender barrier (bringing women into the Own) and I think the men of the Own would already respect her and she'd have their loyalty based on her history as Raoul's squire. Plus I bet Raoul would recommend her for the post. Basically Kel just seems perfect for this role to me. If not Kel, then maybe someone like Alan of Pirate's Swoop since he did train under Raoul too and then he wouldn't be in his mother's shadow any more, but really I want Kel for this role.
I have too many thoughts about this, obviously...

Re: bit in bold. All decisions should be made with this reasoning. More seriously, I discounted Aly based on her Copper Isles dealings - I just don't see anybody trusting her. They could make her a diplomat? I do like the idea of more women in power, though. Also, I approve of Zahir as King's Champion. And I haven't read Spy's Guide, so I totally forgot about haMinch, whoops. And we've neglected to put Naxens in power, so I'm going to put forward Zenoby as PM - she marries a haMinch, so she's clearly sensible because she marries into a good family, and based on nothing except the following 1) Naxens make good PMs, and 2) your point about more women in power, I think she'd make a good PM.

What would make Rosie happy is an excellent basis for all decisions, ha ha. Yeah, I also think that Aly's Copper Isles dealing would be enough to disqualify her from the role of Spy Master. What she did was too much working with the enemy and too close to treason as it were. Aly as a diplomat could be neat. She is smart, she does have experience living in a foreign country and interacting with different people, and she is portrayed as someone who can be charming when she wants to be. I could also see diplomacy as a major focus of Roald and Shinko's rule (just based on their personalities), so it would give Aly a prominent role. I'm so happy you approve of Zahir as King's Champion. I hope to convert every Tamora Pierce fan to that opinion one by one. haMinch is interesting since we don't know how long he will stay in the post as training master. It is possible that he might choose to resign before Roald comes to the throne, so it is probably not a big deal to forget him. Oh, now that you mention it, I love the idea of Zenoby as PM. She's the daughter of the Prime Minister and Cythera who was social secretary to Queen Thayet, so I imagine that she would be schooled in politics since she was little. She is also a Naxen who marries into a powerful family, so it would be a good balance of the conservative and the progressive. It would be so nice to have a woman Prime Minister in Tortall, and it would get people prepared for Lianokami's rule. So, yeah, Zenoby for Prime Minister it is.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say some of these things depend on when Roald becomes King. Jonathan is still pretty young and healthy, so assuming nothing unexpected happens it's probably going to be another 30-40 years at least and Roald will be 50 or 60 or so.
So, probably someone not even born yet for King's Champion or Knight Commander of the Own, but could still do Faleron or someone from their generation for PM or Spymaster. I wouldn't take Aly for any roles. Definitely not a diplomat, which is someone who has to be privy to and keep secrets, and act to further the interests of the realm. It's not a job that someone who has been spying for a rival country is generally trusted with... For training master, I think that could still be done by someone of Roald's generation, but more likely someone a bit younger. It would depend on how hands-on they need to be. Some of them could be teachers though - like how Myles taught history. Neal could still be chief healer.

Poor Aly, what is she going to do with the rest of her life? Good idea for teaching, Idleness. You know Neal would LOVE to teach the pages the sappiest epic poems. I can't decide if I like Kel better as Knight Commander or Training Master. Maybe she does the first until she hits middle age, then takes a peaceful "retirement" helping children beat each other with wooden swords.
