So people have had a wee opportunity to read T&S now.
Anyone getting any plot bunnies for fic?
Personally, I think it could work well for a modern university AU. Arram, Varice, and Ozorne would be flatmates. Arram would be a Philosophy major, Varice would be a Fine Arts major, and Ozorne would be double degree of Law or something like that and another subject. I don't think I'll write it (my motivation sucks right now haha) but it's fun to speculate about who would be what and why, and how the conflict would play out.

I hadn't even thought of them in a modern AU, but I love your ideas.
For Varice, I could also see her being a Psych. Major with her knowledge of people and how to sway them. But I feel like she'd really want a cullinary degree. Maybe Dad didn't allow it.
Ozorne would be way less problematic in a modern AU I think. Probably still privelleged, but not kicking an old man in the marketplace. It'd be nice to see a modern au featuring him handling his mental health in a positive way.
Arram/Numair forever the undecided Major? Maybe thinking of med school?

Varice was my favorite character in T&S, so I'd love to write something focused on her. What exactly I'm not sure yet. Maybe a story showing how she and Ozorne first meet, or a story where we get to see her social prowess at work.
I would love to write a story sort of set in two times involving Lindhall and his relationship with Ozorne and then Kaddar. I just wonder if he would ever see traits in Kaddar that remind him of Ozorne. That would be interesting for me to explore.
For Ozorne, a story exploring his family life (how his mother cultivates his paranoia and his hatred of the Sirajit, and also her general mental instability could be fascinating in a dark way), or dealing with the sort of depressive states that he falls into at school could be a chance to delve into his troubled psyche.
I also think a story examining the disturbing dynamics between Chioke and Ozorne could be very compelling in a twisted way.
I seem to have a bias toward disturbing stories...

Knowing where Ozorne goes from here it's a little hard not to explore disturbing topics.

Knowing where Ozorne goes from here it's a little hard not to explore disturbing topics. Yeah, I think you're right that it's hard not to feel a sense of gathering gloom and foreboding based on how T&S ends and what we know will happen with Ozorne. Even if you wrote a happy friendship fic with Arram and Ozorne or a sweet romance with Arram and Varice, there would still be a tragic or bittersweet undertone since we know that joy won't last. It's probably only natural to want to explore darker topic after reading T&S.

Definitely. I actually had to put the book down for a day or so once Ozorne's darker side started emerging more frequently because it was so distressing to me. But I'm easily affected by that kind of thing. Point stands that anything you write with them is definitely going to have sadder undertones.
Totally unrelated to that, but on the topic of plot bunnies: Maybe it was just me, but I really felt like Ozorne was crushing on Arram at some points.... It would be nice to see a fic that explored that possibility, though I don't think I have any ideas for how such a thing would be written.

Ozorne's growing dark side and struggles with insanity were difficult to read about, so I'm glad you took your time reading them. Issues like that are never easy to process emotionally or intellectually, so better to take all the time you need to deal with them. Since those issues loomed so large in the book, they almost have to shape how we write about it as well like you point out. I think you could definitely make a case for Ozorne being attracted Arram in this book, and perhaps the extent of Ozorne's bitterness over what he sees as Arram's betrayal might be in part explained if he did feel attracted to Arram. There is also the fact that Ozorne never marries and seems opposed to the idea of it in T&S. So, a story about Ozorne being attracted to Arram would definitely make sense to me now that you mention it.

I'm itching to write alll the Varice fic now. Actually, I think I want to write older Varice, but with this new canon and understanding of her personality as a backdrop. We only saw her through Daine's eyes, and Daine... well, she wasn't a fan. But now I have all these feelings about what Varice must have been going through in Emperor Mage, and a lot of questions about what happens to her once Kaddar takes over.

If you write Varice fic, I will definitely read it. After the first Numair book, I did have an itch (that I've yet to scratch) to write about a younger Varice, but you are right that it would be interesting to look at an adult Varice in Emperor Mage (or really at any point during Ozorne's reign) or after Kaddar takes the throne to see how her past shapes her. I think Tammy said in a recent reddit interview that Varice worked as a hostess for Kaddar too, so apparently she still has some power (though maybe not as much) during Kaddar's reign. I like the idea of Varice as a smart, savvy women who manages to survive all this political turmoil relatively unscathed. That can't be easy. There is so much potential there to explore in fanfic.
