I’ve just finished reading, and had a few more comments that weren’t really thread worthy. So general impressions/notes? - Firstly, I love that quote from Garth Nix. It’s beautiful. I’m also planning on looking up the authors recommending, in hope of finding some new good books. - I was really worried about Numair’s pet, as it had been added in after the first draft and just before it was supposed to be first published, and it was going to be a rat. I was so glad it was not a rat and it was Preet, though I don’t think it’s going to be good for Numair.
- Were the Carthak gladiators out of the blue for anyone else? I wasn’t expecting that storyline, and I would have liked it a bit better without it.
- I had thought Numair was an only child with only his mother, so other family was a surprise - and Arram also seemed quite cold in his thoughts about them
- it felt really Emelan like.
- Overall I liked it a lot more than I thought I was going to. I read it quite fast, so I didn’t take everything in - the ending felt a bit abrupt, and it didn’t have the same lead up as the others have? It will be interesting to see how the next book goes, and how they feel as a two parter - comparing TC and TQ, for example.

On Preet, I think that maybe what Arram's healing master said about being able to call for a personal trial before Mithros might end up being important. It just seems like a significant detail and foreshadowing that never got closure in the first book, so I could see it mattering in the next one, especially since the Preet plotline is still open.
I do agree that the ending felt rushed. It might have been the product of needing to split the series at a certain point. We were also left with a lot of cliffhangers and in a way a sense that the real story is just getting started so it will be exciting to see where the story goes next.
