Today is International Women's Day! Are you doing anything in particular to celebrate/commemorate? I am meeting up with a friend later for an event, and I think we're going to try and purchase a book each by a female author.
Also, for my book group, we're currently reading Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong by Angela Saini.
Who are your favourite women - fictional or real?
Beatrice from Much Ado is probably my favourite female character - the sass, the spark, the frustration in her societal/physical limitations.
Jane Austen is my favourite female author, hands down, though I also love Nancy Mitford and Stella Gibbons. Wit and vivacity win out with me, but there's a cleverness to Austen's work that gets me every time.

Happy International Women's Day everyone 😊
I wore purple to work and my Julia Gillard misogyny speech t-shirt to the gym. I looked up some of my local events, but couldn't find one that suited (time, location etc).
One of my favourite female book characters is Lyra from His Dark Materials. She's so fierce and loyal and intelligent, but also belligerent and wild at the start, but she grows so much and has such capacity for love and compassion.
If you haven't already, I recommend everyone checks out Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls. The first one features 100 stories on women and girls from around history and the world with artwork by female artists. It's aimed at girls and introducing them to inspiring women, but I also find it interesting. The second book has recently come out.

Happy International Women's Day, everyone! I like the idea of purchasing a book by a female author. I might do that myself since I love to read.
I do respect and admire lots of women from history and the news today, but the women I admire most tend to be those I know on a personal level. The woman who grew up in poverty in Haiti, worked hard to immigrate to the USA, and now sends money back to her family. The woman who finished college as a single mother and now runs a charity to feed the homeless in the city where I work. The women that struggle every day to balance home and career. The women who fight diseases like cancer and cystic fibrosis. These are the women who tend to inspire me most on a daily basis. These are the everyday woman who are extraordinary.
I have lots of favorite female characters. I always loved Jill Pole and Aravis from the Chronicles of Narnia, who were brave, strong girls who were allowed to have their own character arcs and overcome flaws. I also am very attached to Hermione (she's so clever, brave, and the right mix of serious and fierce), Luna (a love how dreamy she is but also how kind and brave), and Professor McGonagall (so smart and sarcastic and unflinching). I also grew up playing Leia from Star Wars. I always admired how witty and fearless she was.
Some of my favorite female authors are Jodi Picoult (love how she focuses on contemporary issues in a meaningful way), JK Rowling (I just love to escape into the magical world she created), Madeleine L'Engle (her books are classics to me), and Libba Bray (the Great and Terrible Beauty series has such amazingly witty narration).

Kypriotha, that speech where she completely demolished Abbott and his revolting misogyny is one of the best things I've ever seen. Awesome choice of T-shirt! I did reflect on the fact that three of the highest offices in NZ are currently held by women; the Prime Minister, Governor General, and Chief Justice are all women. The only time it was better was during the Clark government when the Speaker of the House also was a woman.
