There have been a couple of posts about this going around tumblr. Which Tortall series would you be most excited to see as a tv series? Kel's? Alanna's? Beka's?
I think Alanna's has always fascinated me the most, and so I think I'd like that. More page hijinks, please!! Those moments in the Dancing Dove? Homewor- okay, they can skip the homework.

Very interesting topic, Rosie. I'd probably be most excited to see an Alanna TV series since those were the first Tortall books I read and were my introduction to the world. I also believe that there is a lot of potential for a great adaptation to screen there--everything from the Old Ones' ruins to the fight with the Ysandir to the war with Tusaine to the swordfight with Roger to Alanna's quest for the Dominion Jewel to the Coronation Day battle could be epic. It could be very sword and sorcery fantasy in a setting I'd love to see.
The Protector of the Small books are my favorite ones but I'm not sure if they'd be as well-suited to a screen adaptation as the Alanna books or the Beka books just because the first two books in the Protector of the Small series are kind of quieter, more character-driven stories (which I love but can be harder to work into a TV series). Probably the series I'd like second best to see adapted would be the Beka books since they could work as a medieval twist on popular police thrillers and mysteries.
Of course, I'd be so excited for a TV series of any of the Tortall books, but those are just my thoughts on what might translate best to screen in my non-expert opinion:D

Ooh, the war with Tusaine would be really interesting. Also, I'd kind of love to see Jonathan and Alanna's romance on screen, but I guess it would also be necessary to amp up Alanna/George.
Immortals would probably lend itself better to a film format? Although I'd absolutely love to see the dinosaur scene.

The Jon and Alanna romance (with some Delia drama on the side) and Alanna's relationship with George would be fun to watch play out on screen. The Daine books would also be great on screen. So many mythical beasts, talking animals, and exciting locations like Carthak. It would probably just need a generous CGI budget to be done right.

I think SOTL would probably be the best one to adapt - it has so much to work with and, despite my undying love for POTS, I think it would be a bit to repetitive and slow for TV. But it would still be awesome!
I used to watch a lot of crime shows, so would like to see Beka done (plus the Breakfast Club dynamics would be fun to explore on screen), but I think they'd either have to do it mini series style or include a lot more events from outside the books, because they don't cover a big period of time or range of events.

I would love to see POTS as a TV show (maybe animated?) but I kind of feel like that in order to have a POTS show you would need to make SOTL and Immortals first in any event because a lot of stuff in POTS would be out of context without them.
But seriously would not complain about any of them being a tv show!

I agree that SOTL or the Beka Cooper books would probably work the best for a TV series. I would prefer to see animated over live action, too. Not sure why I'm even chiming in, since I don't watch TV that much anymore...

Not sure why I'm even chiming in, since I don't watch TV that much anymore... Animation would be cool. I didn't even really think about animation, just mentally pictured live action right away. I actually don't watch TV that often either, but I would definitely watch any TV series of the Tortall books.

I loathe animated adaptations of my favourite esp. children’s books (Anne, Deltora), so I’d rather live-action, in an impossible world where films and TV had no budget constraints.
And I would hands-down want a TV series of the Alanna books. They’re so cinematic in my head - purple eyes, red hair, Moonlight, Lightning, the Goddess, the Dancing Dove, Thayet, quests where you aren’t allowed to utter a word.
They’re also my favourite of the Tortall books, but, admittedly, might lend themselves better to films. If I had to choose, I’d really like Terrier & Bloodhound to be made into shows.

I was mainly thinking about plot (the sword and sorcery aspect) when I considered the Alanna books playing well on screen but you're right that there would also be lot of visually stunning aspects in terms of characters like Alanna (purple eyes, red hair), glowing Lightning, and the Goddess. It could be truly spectacular on screen. I do think the Beka books would make nice TS serials in a sort of police/thriller with a medieval twist way.

I know it wouldn't be able to play out exactly the same way, but I feel like Tricksters could make a great HBO/Netflix Original serial drama. Each episode an hour in length with various political intrigues and fantasy elements. Game of Thrones proved that dramatic fantasy can make it so why not Trickster's? I'd love to see that. SOTL would definitely be an awesome choice for a more mainstream drama. As much as I love Immortals I feel like it would be impossible to work into film or TV. Lots of magic means big budget. Also each book is fairly different in its focus, meaning it might be harder for a series to make them feel 'connected.' Just my opinions though.

Come to think of it, Trickster's would work fairly well as a series for the reasons you mentioned. I'd hate for it to be seen as riding Game of Thrones' coattails though. As much as I like animation, if its really flashy, it'll be harder/more expensive to animate.

I don't think of it as a coattails thing. I just think that TV execs are more willing right now to produce fantasy series than they have in the past. Traditionally sci-fi and fantasy shows are seen as very 'fringe' and poor money-makers. But I think the success of GoT in particular is changing that opinion in Hollywood. So really any beloved fantasy series has a shot at making it, it feels that way to me at least, haha. Plus with TP's stories most of her series are complete so you dont need to worry about catching up to the books I also feel like a story like Trickster's could be expanded on or tweaked without me hating what they changed. i feel like if they change sotl to draw out the romance or make it more 'will they/won't they' it could be irritating. But in Tricksters since the 'bad guys' are more faceless or not presented in a ton of detail they could expand on those roles in a way that could be super neat. Also it would just be cool to see the story told from multiple viewpoints, not just Aly's. Like dang, why hasn't anyone written this screenplay yet?

Screenplay would definitely be fun! Even with my book to screen hangups. I don't know, I guess I'm just tired of the media companies jumping from trend to trend nowadays...

akiMultiple viewpoints - yes! Actually, this is one of the few places I’d be delighted to see them really deconstruct the canon (no disrespect intended to those who like canon - this is just my opinion). I want to see more Sarai and Dove, and definitely more Chenaol. Sadly, it seems rights are complicating things.

It’s.... quieter, it’s a spy drama and not a massive battle between huge armies, and it has a small cast of characters. ITA with regard to Immortals, as well.

The political drama and spy adventure aspects of Tricksters could play quite well on screen. I also think that the setting itself could be visually stunning and very exciting if portrayed right. Like mistrali mentioned the format also might allow for more focus on characters like Dove and Sarai which could be really cool.
