Does anyone have any favourite Tortall AUs? What about crossovers or AUs mixing the different Tortall timelines with each other?
I've always been a fan of a modern SOTL AU, particularly when it weaves in modern politics or social issues.

I'm not a huge fan of modern AUs, to be honest. I get enough of modern life now. I'm super intrigued by time travel AUs (ex: Beka meets George) and Tortall/Emelan crossovers. I also have a not-so-secret yearning for a complete, interesting, well-written Alanna-goes-to-the-convent. I felt the same way about Kel-gets-kicked-out, but Fallen fills that niche for me.

Interesting topic, Kypriotha. I admit I don't tend to read AU's as much as some other genres so I can't really provide specific recommendations unfortunately.
Like Tamari, I'm not the biggest fan of modern AU's. Maybe it's because the setting is part of what makes the Tortall books and fantasy in general so interesting to me. I admit that part of the reason I read fantasy is to sort of slip into another place. I also just find that it is hard to keep characters recognizable when their world is so different and in many ways our environments shape us.
More interesting to me are sort of premise AU's that take the canon in a different direction. The kind of stories that sort of answer a what if question like "What if Roger become king?" Or "What if Kel became a Queen's Rider instead?" Or "What if Alanna went to the convent?" Or "What if Kel stayed in the Yamani Islands?" I guess those intrigue me a little more since they give me a chance to look at canon in a new way or travel to a less explored place in canon like the convent or the Yamani Islands. The danger with those, of course, is some of those premises like Alanna going to the convent can become a bit cliche, and if they aren't well-written, can make me hit the back button really quick.

Actually, I love a modern AU. I'm not sure I could stick out a whole fic, but I love trying to figure out what makes a character tick, and what changes and/or stays the same, depending on their environment.
I really enjoy it when an AU makes me look at canon differently, when it emphasises parts that I hadn't thought were important previously.

I'm not that enthusiastic about modern-day AU fic myself-partly because I prefer fantastic settings and story details over slice-of-life. I do like the idea of canon divergence/what if's style AU's.

Here's one thought I just had: SCI FI AU Something like star-wars or voltron or something. That could be interesting to see.

As a Star Wars fan, I would enjoy Tamora Pierce/Star Wars AU maybe with the Gift as the Force, knights and squires as masters and apprentices in the Jedi Order, the Jedi Code being like the Code of Chivalry, and people like Roger and Ozorne as Sith. It could work at least for a crazy Star Wars fan like me. If I ever wrote it, it'd probably be more humorous than serious, but I could see it as a fun story to read or write.
