Title: The Things We Leave Behind
Rating: G
Summary/Warnings: Sandry's grown up and has to leave certain people behind
Author's Notes: I found a piece of paper with this drabble and decided to post it
...
“Little Bear no!” Sandry cried out desperately, making one last futile attempt to seize his collar and stop the rampaging beast. Her hand closed around it, but the force of his running threw her onto the hard stone floor beside him. After recovering her composure, she sighed mournfully.
“You can’t play here, can you?” she asked sadly, brushing his hair away from his face to reveal two large wet eyes. “This dreary castle was no place for a young playful girl and so is no place for a playful dog of the same nature.”
Little Dog whined in understanding and nuzzled his nose into her palm as if to reassure her that whatever decision she made, he would be fine with it. His eyes stared up at her, shiny with moisture and he whined again, rubbing the side of his head against her hand. She scratched his neck lovingly before saying, “I guess, as the Duke did for me, I will have to do for you. I’ll send you to Disclipine.” Her heart dropped, but Little Bear’s look of longing and freedom stopped her from even coming close to changing her mind.
“You can play with Comas and all the new students, I suppose,” she choked out, her throat suddenly blocked and harsh. “They’re young and need company. I…I’ve grown up and I was stupid to think I could take everything with me. But I don’t want to leave you behind,” she wailed into his fur, feeling the hot marks of tears running down her face. She sobbed, and he cried for her, great whines and howls of sadness.
And it was with a heavy heart that Sandry waved Little Bear goodbye at the gate where she once defended Briar from Crane, the gate leading to the place she had first thought of as home.
