Results of the U.S. presidential election are in... Trump won, suffice to say my dad and brother are going to be very difficult to live with for the near future. I really need to move out... That sucks (The whole situation sucks.) If you (or anyone else) need to vent, you're always welcome to do so here. My only request is that it happens in the Practice Courts, just because politics can be a divisive topic (particularly at the moment!). Will do, thanks. I'll try not to complain too much.

I'm sorry to hear that it will likely affect your home life I hope you will absolutely consider this a safe space for you to air your views or frustrations if you need to. Things are going to be tough, unfortunately.

Ugh yes. Watching the election from abroad was an experience to say the least.

It's surreal and appalling in equal measure. Can 2016 be over now, please?
Edit: And then GIGANTIC EARTHQUAKE. Frightened me out of bed, and my whole body wouldn't stop shaking for another half hour. Still feeling aftershocks, in fact the house is shaking now. Ugh.

Condolences to our friends across the ditch. I feel so awful for Christchurch/the South Island in general - they've had two pretty devastating earthquakes in the last few years, and now this. Idleness That sounds scary. IIRC you're in/near Wellington, but stay safe anyway.

Yep, I'm just north of Wellington in Lower Hutt. I work in central Wellington but there are no trains running today and everyone has been asked to stay home unless travel is essential, as there is a bit of damage up here.
Feeling really bad for the people down in Kaikoura and other towns that are getting hit pretty bad. Just glad that it's not a densely populated part of the country, or it'd be much worse.

max , luckily, my building is still closed so I didn't get trapped in town today. Thank goodness the rain seems to have bypassed Kaikoura. But have you seen the pictures of the coastline all raised up 2 to 2.5 metres?! Amazing.

So like, I've climbed all over North Island mountains but until this week I never realised I come over all Evvy when I'm properly in the mountains.
My friends resorted to whistling up valleys and so on because I kept climbing higher/farther than they were inclined to go. Also this one day (for which I've yet to be forgiven, tbh) I went up a saddle by myself and they got really unnecessarily annoyed with me. I didn't realise how high I'd got til I had to come back down, basically. It was a bit like climbing a tree and getting stuck (which tbh used to happen to me every so often as a child because I only think of the climbs up rather than how to get down again), except mountains are higher and it just meant I had to be careful - and slow - until I got back to the treeline.
Also I came home with many different varieties of stone friends from numerous mountains, rivers and lakes.

My mum is in hospital tonight recovering from surgery. Last week she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
It's apparently very small, and they've caught it very early. They've taken out the offending tissue and a lymph node to be tested. If her lymph node is clear, they won't give her chemotherapy, but they're still going to give her radiotherapy just to be safe.
Even though people (including mum) are telling me that it isn't too bad and it could be worse, there's still a big part of me that worries that I could lose my mum, and it's a really awful feeling.

Sorry to hear you're (understandably) feeling awful despite the early catch. It's always hard to think about losing close family members, especially immediate family, even when there's cause for optimism. Take care of yourself (and your mum, of course).

Wishing your mum the best mageprincess .. It is really good they caught it early. Wishing you all lots of strength through this. Also if it helps allay any anxiety, cancer diagnoses are worked from the worst case scenario backwards. It feels hella scary while they're doing it and can also turn out to be unnecessarily intrusive for the patient, but it's because that way they can treat critical things more quickly, instead of working their way up to them while they get worse in the meantime. I really hope your mum's diagnosis is downgraded over the coming weeks. It's s***e to go through

mageprincess hope both you and your mum are okay! Cancer is always scary, but it's good to hear that it's small and that they've caught it early, so hopefully it's very treatable and your mum makes a full recovery soon. Hope you and all your family are looking after yourselves.

You're lucky they caught it early, sending wishes your way for a speedy recovery! Just remember, you've always got us on here to talk to.

Thanks everyone for the well wishing! Mum's doing okay after her surgery, but was a bit shaky coming off the anaesthetic the day after. She should get the results of the tests on her lymph nodes on Tuesday.

We got some good news on Mum today... she doesn't need Chemo!
They did a DNA test on the cancerous tissue (to the tune of $3,000.00!) to determine what course of treatment. So apparently there is only an 11% chance that the cancer will come back in 10 years, and Chemo will only reduce that chance by 3%. Essentially, it wasn't worth making her sick with the chemo for such little gain.
So thankfully, she only has to have radiotherapy!
