Title: Rebellion
Rating: PG
Event: 400 Cross Country
Competition: Decathlon
Words: 400 words
Summary: Taybur and his men throw in with the raka rebellion.
-
To serve in the King’s Guard, a young candidate requires impeccable letters of reference. Young Taybur Sibigat is the third son of a politically-insignificant baron on Imahyn, so he goes instead into the Rittevon Guard. There, he eventually makes sergeant, and drills his squad until they’re the best in the whole Guard.
It’s one of the many reasons he eventually gets promoted to the Captain of the King’s Guard.
So Taybur brings in his own squad into the King’s Guard, breaks them up, and puts them in positions of command. They know how he likes things done, and he doesn’t have to re-train the entire Guard from scratch, because the first thing he does is to review them and to discover that they’ve gotten downright inexcusably sloppy under Wistan.
What all of this means is that when gods themselves wage war for the Isles, he is ready, because they killed his king. He calls his old squad to him, and some of the reliable young officers and says, “Doubtless you’ve heard of the situation in Rajmuat. The raka are leading a rebellion against regents.”
They glance at each other. “Sarge,” says Ikurun, whose tongue sometimes gets away with him since the old days when he served under Taybur in the Guard, “Are you saying—”
“I’ve not lost my wits, if that’s what you’re implying,” Taybur says. “I’m not that old yet, boys.” Laughter. “What I’m saying is that the regents murdered the king we’re sworn to protect and they now demand we defend them from the raka.” His eyes are cold. “I say we stand by and leave them to it. What say you?”
There are one or two hold-outs. He draws his sword and cuts down the first in a swift movement. The second, Ikurun knifes in the back and gags before he can cry out.
“Well, Captain,” says Juhi, “I reckon these raka are going to have difficulty breaching the walls of the Grey Palace, aren’t they? But if we took down some of those stuck-up Rittevon Guards and disabled resistance—mind, I’m not saying we do anything about the new Queen!” he adds that last, as everyone glances at him in alarm. “But we can hold them until the raka get here, can’t they?”
Taybur draws a deep breath. Done. “Yes,” he agrees, and now it’s treason, and they can’t go back. “That we can do.”
