Title: Snowball Fights
Rating: G
Prompt: Kel/Dom shenanigans (and I'd love you forever if it's shippy shenanigans, but friend shenanigans are more than fine, too)
Summary: Neal's decision to have a snowball fight backfires on him. Twice.
Notes: Holiday themed, pre-relationship, with a healthy dose of Kel's friends and a lot of baiting Neal
Kel shivered as she and Neal walked out of the castle, wondering why she had let Neal talk her into this. “Are we seriously having a snowball fight, Neal?”
Neal grinned at her excitedly. “Kel! Of course we are! Merric and Seaver, maybe Esmond and Faleron also if he’s gotten back!”
“And Merric’s all right with this?” Merric of late hated the cold and could usually be found near a crackling fire.
“He said he’d shame me in front of the court,” Neal said grimly. “I won’t give him the satisfaction.”
Kel groaned. If Merric and Neal were this fired up, things could only get worse if she wasn’t there.
Neal misinterpreted the look on her face. “Oh, Kel, lighten up for once. Your parents are coming tomorrow along with Lord Raoul, the war is over, and New Hope is fine. Really. Even the stuffiest conservative couldn’t say anything about you, especially after everyone found out what you did in the war.”
She privately disagreed with Neal – some conservatives would always hate her for one reason or another, though more were giving her the benefit of the doubt after the war – but let it go for now. “Fine,” she said. She knew how to throw snowballs well enough; hopefully none of the conservatives would be watching the courts today with how cold it was.

“I’m surprised that you let him talk you into this,” Kel said to Merric when she saw him at the court with a shivering Seaver.
Merric glared at Neal who was surveying the courts for the best spot to have the match. “I wouldn’t have, really, but he dumped ink on my report.”
Kel patted him on the shoulder. “Good luck, then.”
“Join my team,” he said suddenly, “We’ll be invincible, Lady Knight, against this madman who doesn’t appreciate a good warm afternoon sitting by the fire.”
Kel laughed. “All right,” she said. “Who else are we recruiting?”
Merric grinned. “I asked Fal to join us. Esmond and Seaver don’t know how to throw a snowball for beans, but Fal and I were pretty good when we were kids.”
“All right,” Kel said. Merric waved at Faleron, giving him a thumbs up. Faleron grinned at them before coming over.
Neal, seeing the three of them, let out a cry. “Kel, you can’t be joining Merric!”
Kel rolled her eyes. “Merric asked me first, Neal.”
He stuck his nose in the air. “You’ll regret it, Keladry” he said dramatically.
The next thing he knew, a snowball had hit him in the face. He brushed it off angrily to see everyone laughing at him.
“You can try, Neal” said Kel, grinning as she shaped another snowball.

Merric’s team had won handily, demolishing Neal’s team’s defenses with well-planned ambushes and well-aimed snowballs.
“I told you Fal and I were good, Kel” Merric said, grinning as he watched Neal get Esmond and Seaver out of the trap they had set out for them.
“I was surprised,” Kel said.
“You weren’t so bad yourself, Kel. I was right to recruit you,” said Merric.
Kel agreed, at least to shake Neal’s mental game it had been a smart move. She wasn’t so bad at it herself, having learned to protect herself from many younger cousins, nieces, and nephews, even though she hadn’t had the time to use such ever since her page days.
“You got us,” said Seaver, walking over to them glumly.
“I’m cold” said Esmond, accompanying him. “How about we all get something hot to drink at the Castle?”
“That’s fine with me,” said Faleron. Merric nodded. Kel was about to nod when Neal caught her elbow.
“Not so fast, Kel. I challenge you! One on one match! For my honor!”
Kel rolled her eyes before looking at everyone else. “You guys go ahead. Neal and I will catch up after.”
“Beat him good, Kel” said Faleron encouragingly before the others left.
***
“Haha, Protector, now I shall take my revenge for your betrayal!”
“Nealan,” Kel groaned from below him, “It was your fault for making us do this in the first place. Now let me up and I promise I won’t humiliate you in swordplay or jousting the next time we do so.”
“But it’s so much fun when you do the latter, Kel” a familiar voice said encouragingly.
Kel blinked – she knew whose voice that was; Neal was so surprised he let go of the snowball which landed squarely on Kel’s face.
“Nice job, Neal” Kel said, pushing Neal off her. A hand started brushing snow off her hair helpfully.
“Kel, I can’t believe that you lost to Meathead.”
She grinned as she turned to face the owner of the familiar voice. Sergeant Domitan of the King's Own, Kel's friend and latent crush was grinning at her. “Dom, I thought you and Third Company weren’t expected until tomorrow.”
“Well, we thought so too but Lord Raoul was sufficiently motivated to hurry us up so we made good time.” Dom’s eyes were twinkling. “I didn’t know that you played in snowball fights, Kel.”
She gave him a wry smile, not letting herself be distracted by his blue eyes. “I certainly didn’t plan it this afternoon, but your cousin was insistent.” She pointed at Neal, who had walked off and was now preparing numerous snowballs for the next round.
Dom started packing some snow into a ball and aimed it at Neal, who yelped when it hit the back of his head squarely. “I shall avenge your honor, Lady Knight.”
She grinned back at him before picking up a clump of snow and shaping it into a ball. “I’ll avenge it myself, Sergeant” she said sassily before throwing it at Neal’s knee. The force of the ball along with his inattention caused him to fall into the snow, bellowing “This is war, Domitan!” He darted into the fort he had made, no doubt to start furiously making more snowballs for his assault.
Dom smiled at Kel as he started making his own fort. “Join my team, Kel?”
She raised an eyebrow at him. “Two against one, Dom?”
“Meathead’s pigheadedness is enough for two, besides, he knows how to fight dirty. Now I, on the other hand-“
“You probably know how to fight as dirty as him in snowball fights,” she said flatly.
He grinned rakishly at her. “Of course, Lady Knight.”
“All right.” Neal had dumped snow on her…

“Dom, you’re dead!”
Dom sidestepped the snowball Neal threw at him. “Not with your snowballs so small and slow,” he retorted, tossing another snowball at Neal and hitting him in the elbow.
Kel shook her head from above a nearby tree. Dom wasn’t joking when he said he was good, with how accurate his aim is. It was almost time for Dom’s trap.
“You’ll pay for that, Domitan!”
Dom grinned before whistling a single note. Kel, knowing the signal, waited for Neal to reach the spot exactly below the tree. When he did, she shook the branches and caused the snow gathered there to fall on him.
“Wha—“
Anything more that Neal had to say was buried along with him in a generous amount of snow.
Kel carefully made her way down the tree, laughing.
“My thanks, Kel” said Dom grandly, walking over to her.
“No problem, Dom” she said, brushing off some snow from her clothes.
“We make a good team,” said Dom, winking at her and making her blush. “But we already knew that.”
Kel grinned as the mound of snow Neal was under started violently moving. “Think we should help him?”
Dom shook his head, shooting Kel a mischievous grin. “Nah, in the worst case scenario Neal can probably try melting the snow with his anger.”
Kel laughed. Dom was such an overgrown boy at times. It was one of the things that endeared him to her.
Dom held out his hand. “Want to go to the Own’s mess hall? I have it on good authority that there will be hot chocolate served in about ten minutes if we ask nicely. Maybe even seconds.”
“Well, I can refuse an offer like that” Kel said, laughing as she took it. If she blushed, she could blame it on the cold.
“Good,” said Dom, squeezing her hand briefly. Kel, surprised, stopped herself from faltering. Maybe that was due to the cold too? She shook her head. She needed that hot chocolate.
