Daja stuck her feet in the tidepool and kicked a bit, splashing Tris, who pulled her nose out of her book long enough to glare.
"Oh, don't!" Sandry cried. "You're scaring off the minnows." She had her skirts kilted up and was moving with glacial slowness across the little pool, hands outstretched in the water as she stalked the shiny silver fish. How Sandry remained balanced on the algae-slickened rocks of the tidepool, Daja could only imagine.
"HA!" Briar shouted, lunging forward. The fish he'd been aiming for - a round, flat, rainbow fish - darted out of his closing hands. He jerked back, slipped, and went sprawling. Little flashes in the water showed where fish fled.
A wave of water, impressively high for a little pool that came only to their calves, swamped the girls. Tris, seated up on the mossy side of the bank, was soaked solid from the knees down.
She slammed the book down. "That's enough,” Tris snapped, eyes flashing. A tiny spark of lightning danced along a curl.
Daja poked her in the arm before she could really lose her temper. "Do you know what kind of crab this is?" she asked, holding out the crustacean. It looked as annoyed as a crab could look, which was significantly. "I've seen red crabs, and some greenish ones, but never a blue one."
Tris stared down at the crab. Her eyes slid sideways towards where Briar was wringing out his shirt, then up to Daja's eyes, then back to the crab. She sighed. "They just call them blue crabs. You find them all along the coast here."
"They're pretty tasty," Sandry remarked. "We could take that one back to the cottage for later, if you like."
"No, let him live," Daja said lazily, setting her captive back down on the edge where the sand met straggling moss and sea grass.
Tris made an abortive move towards her book, then turned. She kicked off her shoes and rolled her stockings off, then picked her way into the pool. "Anybody see any interesting shells? If Niko's going to make me read about all the sea life here, I might as well get to see it."
Briar grinned at her. "I think these are bits of clam shell over here."
"Ooh." Sandry thumped over, abandoning her minnow hunt.
Daja sat on the sand and watched her friends, moving her feet lazily in the water, enjoying the play of cool breezes in the hot summer sun.
Some time later, a shadow fell across her, rousing her from something that was not quite a doze. Daja looked up; Rosethorn stood above her, hands on her hips, watching the other three as they examined something slimy Tris held cupped gingerly in her hands.
Rosethorn caught Daja looking and half-smiled down at her. "I see you lot have been busy."
Daja just smiled.
