"If you don't put down those grain reports, I'm going to light them on fire."
Gary blinked. "Even while I'm holding them?"
"Even so," Cythera said solemnly.
He wouldn't put it past her. Hastily, Gary set the reports down on his desk.
Meekly, he looked up at his wife. "Did I forget something again?"
Cythera graced him with her sweetest smile. Gary cringed. "Not yet," she replied. "I decided this year to be proactive."
Gary stared at the far wall. "It's not that late in December already, is it?"
"If you're asking if it's Midwinter yet, the answer is yes."
"Oh." Gary stood, glanced down at what he was wearing, and smoothed his tunic. It was good enough. He smiled at Cythera and offered her his arm. "Shall we go, then?"
Suspiciously, she took it. "Go where?"
He swung her out into the hall, half-twirling her like she was still a maiden and he a squire. Cythera giggled.
"I made dinner reservations at that new eating-house," Gary said. "The one offering Yamani fare. You said last month you wanted to try it."
Cythera stared at him. "Aren't we supposed to attend Court festivities?"
"As long as we show up sometime during the week, Jon's not going to care that much. Besides," Gary said wickedly, "he owes me and he knows it."
Cythera socked his arm, then looked down at her gown. "I'm overdressed."
"No, you're perfect," Gary replied. "You're always perfect." He paused. "Besides, I'm not dressed enough. Between us, we're perfectly appropriate."
Cythera laughed. "You infuriating man."
Gary bowed, grinning. "Always, my lady. I live to serve."
