Title: Little Things
Rating: G
For: Idleness
Prompt: #3 Ilane and Kel
Summary: Mother-daughter time in the city.
Kel took great pleasure in watching someone else be prodded and pinned for once. Her mother, though, seemed to be enjoying the dress fitting; she held perfectly still as Lalasa bustled about with pins pinched between her lips, and the two women smiled at each other enough that it started to make Kel’s cheeks ache from just witnessing it.
Even in its rough state, the dress held the promise of beauty and elegance. Kel could easily imagine how it would look once finished, with its wide cream-coloured sleeves and gold embroidery. For Ilane’s next appearance at court Lalasa had managed to create a perfect composition of Yamani and Corus styles, with a simple Tortallan gown as the base.
Once the fitting was finished, Kel ushered her mother outside, where they walked a short distance to the tea house that Kel had discovered and taken a liking to some weeks ago. A tiny bell tinkled above the door as they went inside.
“I could easily become accustomed to this,” said her mother later, as they sipped their tea.
Kel smiled. “It would be nice to have you in Corus. Something pleasant to come back to, when I’m at New Hope.”
“And what would I do here while you were away?” She raised an eyebrow. “Pine? Count the days until my daughter’s return?”
“Now you’re beginning to sound like Neal,” Kel said, making a face. The two of them laughed.
Her mother’s expression softened, and she reached across the table to touch Kel’s hand. “I know we had plenty of time together when you were small. Your father and I are both proud of you—of the woman you’ve become. But I still wish that we had more time.”
Heat pricked at Kel’s eyes. “I know. All I ever wanted was to make you proud—to be half the woman that you are.”
The Yamani mask that her mother wore was flawless from years spent at the Emperor’s court, but Kel had always known how to read along the seams: the quickly-controlled trembling of her mother’s lip when she smiled, the way her eyes widened so as not to blink. Kel squeezed her hand, then reached for her half-full teacup and let the steam warm her face as she drank.
New Hope kept her busy, and away from Mindelan, but she knew how to treasure the time she was given with the people who shared her heart.
