Title: Slip of the Hand Rating: PG just to be safe For: Imaginemi Prompt: #2 - Dove dark Summary: Dove reflects on a turning point. Notes and Warnings: Imaginemi, I hope this is dark enough for you; it’s more implications than anything else. Startlingly enough, it’s technically canon-compliant.
*******
It had been the work of a moment to slip the love powder to Sarai - they ate breakfast and dinner together every day, after all, and almost always lunch, too. Sleight-of-hand was not a hard trick to master.
It was a little harder to slip the powder to Zaimid; fortunately, he was often over, paying court to Sarai, and there were always refreshments about. And Zaimid was so courteous, so solicitous of anyone who looked a bit neglected. There had been a bit of worry about whether the soon-to-be royal healer of Carthak had training in the symptoms of love powders, but either he did not, or he simply assumed it was his own infatuation growing. He had been paying court to Sarai, after all.
Honestly, the biggest worry had been Aly. Aly Bright-Eyes, the supposed maid who was so clearly not a maid, too clever by half, god-touched, and blessed with the Sight in a strength unheard of. But to use the Sight, one must be looking, and one does not look for what one does not expect to find. And no god who embodied trickery as Kyprioth did would ever think to warn her.
Really, Dove thought, this should have been harder. She straightened her crown with a subtle brush of her fingers, and didn’t regret a thing.

This (strategy and writing both) is just subtle enough for Dove. Beautiful work.

Beautiful! That is totally what Dove did Aly will just never know... I really loved the line about how courteous Zaimid was, because I really could see Dove using that to her advantage, going up to him and talking. Thanks a lot! It really really makes me want to start writing fic in this verse.

*dances* Yay, you liked it! XD
I was thinking of that one scene in TQ where Dove's waiting in the same room as Sarai's group for the last of the luarin conspirators to show up, and there's a little line about how Zaimid noticed she was sitting by herself and went over to chat with her. Sure, it shows he's kind, observant, and courteous ... but also an easy mark for a ruthless Dove. XD
Feel free!

Okay, now you need to pull a Midnight Sun and rewrite the whole series from Dove's POV...

Okay, now you need to pull a Midnight Sun and rewrite the whole series from Dove's POV... Straight up though. The subtlety of this was perfection.
