"Tris?"
Tris ignored the familiar voice, hoping he would decide she wasn't in and would go away. After all, he couldn't read her mind.
"Trisana, I know you're in there. Open the door please."
Tris sighed. She knew better than to refuse to obey that voice. Grumpily, she stomped over to the door and threw it open, before returning to her seat at her desk. Niklaren Goldeye stood in the door to her dorm room, one eyebrow raised.
"And good afternoon to you too," he said archly, before coming in and closing the door. He sat down on her bed, the only other place to sit in the small room. "At least I don't have to worry about what I will find in your bed when I sit on it, unlike Briar's."
Tris looked up from the book she was reading and glared at her former teacher. "What do you want Niko? If you couldn't tell, I am trying to study."
Niko pretended to cough into his hand to hide a smile. "Well, I see Lightsbridge hasn't improved your manners."
"And why should it?" Tris demanded. "I'm here to learn magic, not deportment. Now either tell me what you want or go away."
"I was passing through the area and I thought I would stop by to see how you're doing and perhaps even take you out to dinner."
"You know I can't be seen with you Niko! It would blow my cover. I'll just eat in the mess hall like normal."
"That's why we would go somewhere in the city where there would be no one from Lightsbridge to recognise you," Niko said patiently. "And if I recall correctly, the mess hall food is not that good. I thought you might like a break from it. Plus, Sandry and Daja tell me that you haven't made any friends here. Having company for dinner would be a nice change for you."
Tris scowled and turned back to her book. She muttered something that Niko chose to ignore, but sounded a lot like 'interfering busy-bodies'. Further muttering seemed to be directed at him. "I can look after myself, you know. I don't need you to molly-coddle me. And anyway, I have to study. I have a big test next week."
"Surely you don't want to spend your birthday in this room, studying alone."
Tris turend round to gape at Niko. "You, you remembered my birthday?" she whispered.
"Of course I did. And I would like to take you out to dinner to celebrate. Now, will you accept my kind offer or will you spend the whole evening hiding in your room?" Niko asked tartly.
"I, well, thank-you Niko. I'd love to have dinner with you," Tris said quietly.
"Good," said Niko turning towards the door to hide his smile. "Because I have presents for you from your family in Summersea which you don't get until we're at the restaurant. Now, I'll wait outside while you change."
He went into the hall and closed the door. From inside the room, he heard Tris call out, "Nowhere expensive!"
