Title: Black City Paradox I Rating: PG Word Count: 203 Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan Round/Fight: 3A Summary: It's black and dead and chilling even when they are (finally) the only living beings there. Warnings: Canon-baddie death referenced
AN: Another Paradox prompt, #1; "Alanna and Jon go to the Black City"
Their footsteps echo emptily on the streets of the Black City when Alanna and Jon arrive. Everything about the City waits expectantly, a morbid and attentive focus on the only two beings moving through its streets. Alanna shrinks down, feeling smaller than usual between the smooth black walls all around them.
“Come on,” Jon whispers, beckoning, and Alanna scurries behind him until they are out of the open, hugging the walls and the shadows as she follows his path.
The next time Alanna steps out, battered and bedraggled and bone-tired, her steps still ring out hollowly, and she wonders why she expected something different.
“Let’s get out of here,” Jon says, eyeing the carvings that cover the city with a new eye. Above them, a bird-headed man stares down off of his two-dimensional throne, a hand raised threateningly.
“Lets,” Alanna agrees instantly, warily backing away from the building where, now, only a scorch mark on the floor remains.
Two seated statues guard the inner gate, and Jon stops for just one more moment, gazing up at their terrible, impassive faces. There is no mercy, no compassion in their stiff, ramrod straight poses.
“The Bazhir were right, to seal this place with fire.”
