Title: I do
Rating: G
Word Count: 372
Pairing: Buri/Raoul
Round/Fight: 2B
Summary: in which rumours spread, and Buri gets a grass ring.
The maid heard it from the cook, who heard it from a stable boy, who'd overheard two Ostlers discussing the matter. It takes a whole week before Buri hears, and by then most of the Palace knows.
She charges across the grass to a tree at the side of the lake, where the Giantkiller sits. Buri stops when she reaches him and puts her hands on her hips.
'Ahem.' He looks up when she clears her throat, absently twisting a long piece of grass through his fingers.
'Yes?'
'It was just something I heard, and I just thought I'd come and tell you. It's silly, and probably nothing, but I just wondered HOW exactly we came to be married?!'
'I don't know what you're talking about...' Raoul gulps.
'Sure you don't.' She says sarcastically. 'So, when and WHY did this happen?'
'Oh, ah... Hem... It's a funny story, really...' He looks up, sees her glaring and looks away again quickly.
'Oh yes? Start talking.'
He takes a deep breath and speaks. 'I... I made up a lie about us being married because my relatives kept trying to marry me off to women that I'd never met before, and quite frankly it isn't at all pleasant, and I figured that if I told them that I was already married then they'd have to leave me alone. I'm sorry. It's all I could think of at the time.' Raoul sighs. 'I'll tell them that it's a lie.'
A strange sound comes from Buri and he looks up in surprise to see her laughing.
'They tried to marry you so you- told them we were married- unpleasant!' She grins at him. 'You poor thing. Are you that desperate to get away from them?'
'Yes! You don't know what they're like!'
She shakes her head and flops down beside him on the grass, stretching her legs out in front of her. 'So, do I get a ring?'
'What?'
She nods to the strand of grass that he's been playing with. It's twisted into a small circle without him realising.
Raoul grins, takes her left hand, and slides the ring on it. 'I now pronounce you to be my sort of wedded wife.'
She grins. 'I do.
