Title: The Voice Paradox II. Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 213 Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan Round/Fight: 2A Summary: Paradox Prompt part 1: Jon is not the Voice. No Bazhir may make war on the Voice of the Tribes. Warning: References past-canon-character death.
No Bazhir may make war on the Voice of the Tribes.
Alanna brings back another report; the southern-most tribes have mobilized against the nearby fiefs. Breakout fighting has been happening sporadically since the year turned, five months ago, but now this is different. There is sand in her hair and lines around her eyes from squinting in the sun, and Jon reads no good news in her expression, her eyes hard and set under her burnoose.
The Voice has spoken in favor of the southern tribes.
Alanna doesn’t look Jon in the eyes when she tells him this and Jon knows why. He remembers Ali Mukhtab just as she does. Jon remembers the heat of his skin—too hot, sick, dying--the desert, his anger as Jon rode away from the tents of the Bloody Hawk and didn’t look back.
Jon remembers, and struggles with memories he wishes he didn’t have.
He hasn’t returned yet—to read the history he had requested, to declare war and call the sporadic fighting what it has become—and he and Alanna hold a secret between them.
No Bazhir may make war on the Voice of the Tribes.
But Jon is only the son of the despised Northern King, and war rides behind him when he goes.

So, I love this whole fic, because I <3 both AUs and Muse!fic, and this is both - like I said in chat, it's a perfect storm of awesomeness. I love how you seize on one moment from canon and make it come out just slightly different, and then this whole AU spins off that. Those are probably my favorite kinds of stories, and I love how you pack this with interesting implications. Jon in WWRLAM is always so weird to me. On the one hand, he's a complete pompous, entitled jackass to Alanna, and on the other he takes his duty to Tortall and the Bazhir really seriously … except for that one moment you seize on, where he nearly leaves in a huff. I mean, it doesn't break my suspension of disbelief or anything, because I know people like that, but it still seems weird that Jon has, apparently, so perfectly compartmentalized his life. And so I like how you show the ramifications of what would've happened if Jon had actually left, if he'd been the presumptive ass towards the Bazhir that he was to Alanna. And now you can never say I've never left you a review. So there.
