Neal Queenscove is good with that sword of his. Evin and Miri survive the initial bloodbath by taking off straight for the woods, exactly as she orders them too. Yuki snatches up a pack and heads off immediately for water, which makes a good deal of sense, and no sense at all.
All the pieces are in place for the drama that is the 72nd Hunger Games as it unfolds.
Buri grinds her teeth together as Evin and Miri die together on the third day, overwhelmed by muttations and stalks over to Raoul’s mentoring station. He watches his Tributes team up with Yuki’s District partner and Neal’s to hunt down the group of them. Neal has struck out on his own—another note of similarity between this Games and Raoul’s—and is searching for water. “And the girl,” Raoul says aloud, amused. “Definitely the girl.”
Yuki stays put. She’s a good swimmer, and she’s managed to get a knife somehow, and so she fishes and whittles a fallen branch and hardens it by fire to get herself a crude spear. Buri shakes her head. “I told them,” she says quiet. “Evin and Miri. I told them to move, because Tributes who get too comfortable where they are are dead Tributes. Comfortable Tributes are boring and the Gamemakers hate boring.”
Raoul touches her hand, lightly. He doesn’t need to say anything. Buri sighs, and leans back into his touch. “Well,” Raoul says, “The Gamemakers will drive them towards each other soon.” Buri counts: one, two, three, four...
“Eight Tributes left,” she finally says. “They’re definitely going to do something.” The Career pack this year has survived mostly intact, even if Neal and Yuki aren’t playing by the rules. The Gamemakers know this; they’re probably already rubbing their hands in glee at the thought of the potential drama. Neal being confronted with the girl whom he’s confessed his love to, and the allies he’s abandoned, nevermind that he’s never made a formal alliance with the other Careers.
She hates the Games. Pointless executions, and the Capitol drapes it over with diamonds and gold and velvet.
She sees the direction of her thoughts reflected in Raoul’s expression. “Two hours,” he says. “That’s the most they’ll give them.”
He’s right. In about an hour and a half, the stream level rises, so it reaches Yuki’s waist. This wouldn’t be a problem for her, except the other half of the Arena dries out. The Tributes are being driven to Yuki’s location, and then they clash.
Yuki has managed to affix her knife to the haft of her makeshift spear, and now they see where her ten comes from, as she weaves about in a complicated pattern-dance that is deadly enough. She kills the girl from One, and then Raoul’s screen pings and one of his Tributes, the boy, is dead.
The girl chops Yuki’s spear in half and wounds her and is about to kill her when Neal manages to arrive in the nick of time. He cuts her down, and then he fights with Raoul’s other Tribute. Yuki sneaks up from behind and stabs him with the sharp half of her broken spear.
Raoul’s screen pings again, and then both coloured dots representing his Tributes wink out.
Neal and Yuki, on the other hand, are speaking warily. He offers to treat her wounds, telling her his father is a doctor and he’s been trained as one. A silver parachute bearing the number four floats down from the sky, and Buri and Raoul lean forward, trying to make out what it is.
A medic's kit.
Buri groans. “The Capitol is going to love this,” she says, disgruntled.
Raoul says, “You think?” He adds, “I wouldn’t worry about that. Alanna is going to be unbearable.”
“Think we can escape from the party afterwards?’ She smiles (only now she smiles) at the memory of a party and a balcony and a potted plant.
Raoul shakes his head woefully. “No.”
