She watches his Games. Everyone has to watch the Hunger Games, and in District Ten, everyone knows that the Capitol controls you. Everyone’s eyes are on Raoul, the Tribute Reaped from District Two. It’s interesting; there’s usually a good number of volunteers from Two but there’s none in his year. One, Two and occasionally Four usually win the Games, and this time looks to be no different. Raoul is tall and strong, and he towers over most of the other Tributes this year. With sloe-black eyes, and curly dark hair, he’s a striking figure and everyone (they don’t bet in District Ten, but they have their opinions and it is with a sinking heart that they know their Tributes don’t stand a chance of coming home except in a pine box draped with a flag depicting the District seal) thinks he’s going to win it.
With a training score of ten, he’s poised to win the Games in terms of sponsors. And he does. In his interview with Caesar Flickerman, when he smiles, Buri realises: he’s just an overgrown boy, in many ways. His ruddy face is pleasant and smiling and everyone knows that’s a lie because no gentle person gets a ten in training and things will be different in the Arena.
And they are, though in ways no one expects. Raoul is a danger with the sword and with a spear. He gets hold of a sword immediately in the initial bloodbath at the Cornucopia, and then it’s all over. Most of the other Tributes already know he’s the one to beat: they just can’t do anything about it. Raoul Goldenlake doesn’t create or join a Career pack, even though he’s obviously a Career. They’re riffing on it now, calling him the Golden Boy of District Two, and with his boyish charm, he manages to sell it.
As they expect, the two tributes from Ten die in the initial bloodbath. Buri clenches her fists and quietly sings the mourning song. Raoul fights off the Tribute from District One, Ralon Malven, and kills him. The female Tribute, Eldorne, is cunning and she gets her hand on a brace of knives and flees. Everyone watches, rapt. There is no Career pack this year and that means that everything changes.
Raoul takes his pick of the survival packs, straps on the sword, and grabs hold of two spears and some knives. The cameras follow him as he disappears into the forest.
And then he stops killing. He’s picked up survival skills they don’t normally see in the Careers and builds himself a small concealed camp and hunts. She wonders if he’s even a Career—there’s too much about him that doesn’t fit, but where else would he learn to fight and kill? He stays close to this camp, sets noise traps to warn himself when other Tributes come close. The other Tributes thin their own ranks. Finally, Eldorne encourages the other Tributes to band together to take out the giant from Two, and only then, flushed out from hiding, Raoul fights.
Eldorne tries to knife him from behind, but Raoul turns and his sword bites deep into her side. Buri watches as the cannon fires, and as Raoul is crowned. She turns away.
