"I'm doing my first operation tomorrow, Kel." Sporadic beads of sweat stuck out on Neal's wide, pale face. He groaned despairingly and turned over yet again on the couch.
Kel sighed and without preamble, calmly swatted him with a pillow. "Now you're hair's even messier than it started out," she chuckled.
"God, Kel!" Neal mumbled from the depths of the cushions.
"Aaaand," she continued, "Good thing I remembered today was Anxiety Attack day, because I bought tickets to Shakespeare in the Park! And we're going tonight."
He bolted upright and sprang to Kel. "Really? Seriously, Kel, you're the best, but don't think that what you're doing is going to fool me."
"What?" said Kel innocently. "If you don't want to go, I can tell Yuki it's cancelled."
If it was possible, Neal turned even paler than he already was. "Yuki? I - I'm in no shape to - ergh - okay, it's all good. I don't care what your designs are, I'll come."
"This'll be fun," Kel whispered to herself just as she heard a knock on the door.
"Oh! It's, um - " Neal ran for the bathroom, but Kel stopped him.
"No time for washing up."
"You're cruel."
A small zip of a coat and the sound of slippers brought Yuki into the living room. "Hi guys," she said, hugging Kel and grinning indulgently at Neal. "You look tied up."
Neal visibly relaxed. "No, just a bit tired."
"Oh, okay. Well there'll be plenty of room on the amphitheatre to sleep." She threw him a blossom-pattered blanket from her bag. "You can use this, but watch out, because your hair will get caught in the silk. But maybe that's for the best." She slid her coat off and sat down. Neal had to look down a little; Yuki was slightly shorter than him.
Kel threw herself into the armchair opposite them and watched Yuki. Her mouth tilted up. This night was the catalyst - credited to her. She was thinking of starting a matchmaking-dressmaking business with Lalasa. That way she would have a real reason to split her earnings, and Kel could be guilt-free.
Rustling in earshot made her look up. Yuki had shifted closer to Neal and was stroking his face. His hand was on her wrist and his knees touching hers. The medical badge on his sweater had fallen onto the carpet and Yuki was unconsciously crushing it with her foot.
"I'm not worried for you in the slightest," she whispered. "Just make sure you don't faint on your way out the operation room."
