I take off running, the moment the countdown hits zero. Feet pounding against the dirt, bent over as far as possible to make myself a smaller target. I volunteered for the Games because I was sick of starving. I don’t intend to die here.
Of course, to win the Games, I’ll have to kill Aniki. And I’ll have to kill Beka Cooper, the girl from Twelve with the most interesting eyes.
I shut it all off, decide to think about that later. I’m faster than Aniki; I scoop up a brace of knives, and barely in time to flick one at the throat of a Tribute who looms ahead of me. I don’t regret it. He’d have gutted me in an instant. A sheathed sword is propped up against the side of the Cornucopia. I duck under the sweep of a trident, grab the sword. Aniki’s eyes meet mine, and I throw her the sword. She snatches it out of the air, and we back towards each other.
Where’s Westover?
I spy him; he’s grabbed a pack and hightailed it for the woods. We’ll find him later and hook up. There’s no sense in fighting off a pack of Careers right now. Aniki and I scoop up packs with what we’ll need. I pick up a pair of long knives, and send another one into the stomach of a Tribute charging for me with a sword. Where’s Beka?
I see her then—she’s slipped through the chaos and is heading for the mouth of the Cornucopia. Isn’t she supposed to be more clever than this? What does she have in mind? Aniki easily cuts down another Tribute who is trying to spear her. I throw a knife before a Tribute who’s snatched up a bow can kill us. I don’t shout to Beka—distraction can kill her as easily as whatever she’s planned. It’s then that I see what she’s snatched up. A wooden baton.
The thickset Tribute from District Two faces her, with a gigantic spiked mace. I throw. The knife catches him in the arm—I’ve been running and fighting, and my aim is off. Beka takes that instant to kick him…well.
I wince; his bellow is enough for us all. I wonder what the audience in the Capitol is making out of our Tribute from District Twelve. She glances over at me, ice-blue eyes narrowed. “Run, you great looby!” she shouts, and starts doing that herself. So it seemed all hostility was forgotten. I yell to Aniki, who’s already started running.
“Does that mean we’re allies?” I shout to Beka, as she manages to put her backpack squarely between her and a cast knife which lodges in the pack. I turn my head, aim and throw in a fluid movement, without thinking. The female from One collapses, my knife in her throat. Beka frowns at me, and Aniki has caught up with us by this point. Beka has warmed up to Aniki, and when I add, “We’re meeting up with Westover,” it seems that she’s made up her mind.
“Allies,” Beka says. She doesn’t have to add, “for now.” We all know that how temporary these things are.
