Beka stirred her tea distractedly. Helping Granny Fern with the chores had helped take her mind off things, but now they were sitting down to drink tea she had nothing else to focus on.
Granny Fern watched her with a knowing smile. Beka caught her looking and scowled. "What?"
"Did you know that's the second spoon of sugar you've stirred into your tea? And I always thought you didn't care for tea that was too sweet."
Beka sighed, took a sip of her tea, pulled a face and sighed again. Achoo, at her feet, whined and sniffed at her legs.
"What is it, love? Boy troubles?" Granny Fern's smile grew bigger and more wicked.
Beka pulled another face. "Why are boys so stupid? Chasing you when you don't want to be chased, letting you go when you'd rather they held on. It's always the right one in the wrong place or the wrong one in the right place."
"I didn't think you gave much thought to boys. I thought you were too busy catching Rats." Beka looked carefully at her Granny to see if there was an accusation in that last statement, but Granny Fern's face was carefully bland as she fed Pounce some scraps of meat.
"I don't. I am. Just sometimes...it might be nice to have someone to come home to."
"You could do a lot worse than the Rogue, you know."
Beka glared and set down her tea cup more forcefully than she'd intended to. Achoo sat up at the sudden noise. "And I could do a lot better."
She stood up as if to leave. Granny Fern laughed and tugged her back into her seat. "I was only teasing. Sit with me a bit longer. I never get to see you anymore! Tell me about everything you and Achoo and Master Pounce have been up to since you got back to the city. I won't mention the Rogue again."
