Title: A Midsummer Night's Kiss
Rating: PG
Word Count: 582
Pairing: Rebekah Cooper/Rosto the Piper
Round/Fight: 1C
Summary: Rosto surprises Beka as she comes home on Midsummer Night.
***
Rosto was loitering in the entrance hall to Mistress Trout's lodgings, trying to look inconspicuous and like he had a perfectly reasonable excuse for being there. Clearly he needed more practice at it, if Kora and Anniki's smirks as they came and went were anything to go by. Rosto muttered to himself and set about busily scrubbing the floor, as if to clean away muddy footprints, conveniently ignoring the fact it was summer and there had been no rain for weeks.
A warning yowl from outside caused him to quickly jump up and begin wringing out his cloth in the bucket expediently located by the door.
The door swung open and Pounce entered, followed by Beka. Exhausted as she was after Evening Watch on Midsummer night, she immediately spotted both the vase of gillyflowers Rosto had set on the steps and then Rosto himself. She was clearly not too tired to muster up a scowl, though at least it didn't reach her ghost eyes.
Or maybe she just liked Rosto more than she usually liked to let on.
Rosto bestowed upon her his most charming smile and gave his cloth one last twist with a great flourish. Beka's scowl deepened.
"I hope you weren't waiting up for me, Rosto the Piper."
Rosto gave her a sorrowful look. "So young and yet so suspicious! Here I am, cleaning up the dirt Anniki and Kora's associates tracked into the house and you accuse me of some ulterior motive!"
The corner of Beka's mouth twitched. Rosto couldn't tell if she was trying not to smile or if she just wanted to frown at him some more, but her mouth was too tired to cooperate.
"And I'm s'posed to believe that you, the Rogue of Corus, who probably has much better things to do on Midsummer night, is the one left to clean dirt off the floor."
Rosto maintained his sorrowful look. "You know the company Anniki and Kora keep. Heathens, the lot of them. Cleaning the floor would never occur to them. And it is outside my door. You know how fussy I am about cleanliness."
He was almost positive that twitch was a smile. He carefully concealed one of his own. He didn't want to scare her off when it was going so well.
"Well..." Beka glanced around in a brief moment of shyness before her eyes fell on the gillyflowers. The scowl was back in place. "Then what are those?"
Rosto quirked one eyebrow. "Who said they were for you?" He was rewarded by Beka's blush. "I like flowers in my room too. I just set them there whilst I was cleaning the floor."
"I, well, I, um..."
Rosto was charmed by Beka's stutter. This must be what Sir Tullus saw every week. Clearly at a loss for what to say, Beka started sidling past Rosto towards the stairs, Pounce nimbly bouncing up the stairs in front of her. Rosto waited until she was almost at the stairs before catching her round the waist and bending her backwards. He kissed her before she had a chance to protest, swift, but sweet and soft, and then set her upright on the bottom step. He grinned at her from the hallway.
"Happy Midsummer, Beka."
She just stared at him open mouthed for a minute, before running upstairs to her room. Pounce paused to give him one knowing look before following her. None of them ever discussed the gillyflowers appearance outside her room the next morning.
