Title: It’s Better This Way Rating: PG13 Word Count: 210 Pairing: George Cooper/Roger of Conte Round/Fight: 1C Summary: George shouldn’t feel conflicted. Deviation from canon in which Roger and George are lovers, though the former doesn’t know the latter’s identity.
The clothes scattered across the floor between the patches of moonlight are unmistakably fine, Carthaki silk, the best that money can buy. George knows that Roger wears such finery for these little meetings as a reminder, but it doesn’t get under his skin. It amuses him to let Roger think that it does, though.
He lets himself pretend, too. That the strong fingers biting into the muscles of his upper arms, his back, are motivated by passion, rather than power, and the suffocating kisses that make his jaw ache and his head spin are driven by a primal urge that has nothing to do with stolen thrones.
There are other things he can’t pretend: the way his body responds to the other man’s touch, the uncertainty and resentment that come when Roger is absent from his rooms for weeks.
Promises mean nothing to George, after what he’s Seen. He knows how the story ends. Not for a minute has he worried that getting himself in this deep could be a mistake, that he should consider all that Roger has offered.
Alanna will be the one to kill the Duke. He’s half glad of that. Part of him wants to twist the knife himself; part of him wants to say goodbye.

Oh Em, your last lines. I wish I could elaborate more, but it's just so well written and making a lovely juxtaposition, and----- *flailing*
...yes.
