Title: Up and Away
Rating: G
Word Count: 321
Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan
Round/Fight: 1/A
Summary: Sometimes the impromptu decisions are the most needed ones.
:::
“Camping?” Alanna asks. “Why?”
Jon shruggs. “I just need to get out of the castle right now,” his eyes drift to the crown that’s sitting on it’s purple cushion. “I was hoping you’d come with me.”
“Sure I’ll go,” Alanna says. “When did you want to leave?”
His eyes snap back to her face. “Five minutes? Fifteen if you need it.”
Alanna is silent for a moment, the nods. “I’ll be down as soon as I can.”
:::
The ride into the woods goes by quickly, with Jon wearing a blissfully bright smile and Alanna breathing in the sharp autumn air. Later, when they’re sitting at a fire, Jon’s hand finds hers.
“Thank you for coming with me,” he murmurs.
Alanna smiles back. “You know you can always come to me, whenever, about whatever.”
Jon nods. “I rely on you—and Gary and Raoul too—more than you realize. I don’t think I could manage being king without you all.”
Alanna squeezes his hand, then curls against him. “Tell me,” she says, exhaling softly against him, “Which noble has been giving you the most trouble lately.”
Jon laughs and places his arm around her shoulders. “That’s a tricky one. We’d have to establish several parameters for annoyance and a point system to decide the winner. It’s too close otherwise.”
Alanna smiles. “If they’re giving you too much trouble, let me know. I’ll cut up all their clothes in their sleep.”
Jon laughs again, and this time it’s fully light, with the kind of spirit it used to have when they were younger, back before he was king. “See? Without you I wouldn’t have anyone else to carry out those kinds of threats.”
Alanna shakes her head. “I don’t know. I think you could manage—Raoul would carry out the job.”
“Not without waking up the entire castle he wouldn’t.”
“True,” Alanna says, giggling, and her eyes begin to drift shut with exhaustion.
