Title: Diamonds Rating: PG Word Count: 129 Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan Round/Fight: 1A Summary: She isn’t traditional, after all. Inspired by lyrics from “Part of Me” by Katy Perry because apparently Katy is my Jon!tunes of choice.
A diamond ring is out of the question, and Alanna lets him know in no uncertain terms.
Jon’s expression is comical when he asks why, as though he can’t possibly fathom a reason why she would possibly refuse.
“It wouldn’t fit under my armor—imagine if it broke?” she informed him tartly, and if possible, his eyes opened wider.
“Seriously?” Jon wants to know, “that’s your reason? Because—“
Alanna huffs impatiently. “Of course not, but could you imagine?”
It takes longer than she would like, but eventually Jon comes around to understand why she, of all people, would not be showing off an engagement ring.
Let the court talk about how unconventional she is now. At least no one can ever say she has become a tame Lioness.

hahaha, so much truth in this. A) Alanna can't become "tame" because that would ruin her reputation, B) Jon is just dumbstruck, which is always a good thing

I laughed a lot at "At least no one can ever say she has become a tame Lioness." Oh, Alanna, you're like Aslan! Just kidding, but I liked the characterisations here. It's certainly very true; Alanna would never be a conventional Queen, even if they'd married!

Oh, Alanna. I like the difference in values - or in perception - here, with Jon not understanding why Alanna won't wear a ring and Alanna not understanding why he doesn't get it. It shows off their different perspectives and roles in society (and the assumptions inherent in that) really well - Jon as privileged king, Alanna as a woman who's had to fight for her right to be seen as independent.
