Title: Sticks and Stones
Rating: PG
Word Count: 363
Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan
Round/Fight: 1A
Summary: The new page is full of surprises. Inspired by lyrics from “Part of Me” by Katy Perry because apparently Katy is my Jon!tunes of choice.
There isn’t a lot about Ralon of Malven that would endear a person to his cause. From the moment he set foot into the page wing of the Palace, he’d been crude, rude, and nasty. The slightly squinty set of his eyes and the sneering curl of his mouth did nothing to help by way of appearances, and so long before anything else happened, Jonathan of Conte could say with a clear conscience that the page was simply repugnant, in and of itself.
The one time he voiced this out loud, however, Gary slapped him on the back and told him to take his nose out of the air, your very highness.
But when that new page steps out into the hall on his very first day and into a brawl with Malven, Jon can’t help but notice. The lad’s plucky, a spitfire with nerves of steel and purple eyes that bore into the back of your head when he thinks you won’t notice.
Jon notices.
It isn’t hard to come to the new lad—Alan of Trebond—‘s aid when the bigger page picks on him, even though Alan stubbornly refuses to stop picking up bruises left and right when Jon’s careful eye isn’t on him.
Gary laughs at his expression that time too, because apparently he is too young to sound as world weary as the Duke of Naxen. Please, highness, get over yourself.
Things escalate quickly when Alan’s arm gets broken falling down stairs, a look not improved by the colorful remains of two black eyes from other stairs that seem to have it out for the page, and for a while Jon worries day in and day out, wondering how much longer Alan can last.
The day in the practice courts when Alan opens his mouth and begins a long list of Ralon’s faults, Jon’s jaw drops at the sheer impertinence of the younger boy.
Gareth pounds gleefully on Jon’s shoulder, whispering fiercely so that he does not interrupt the lengthy, inclusive, brilliant speech that Alan directs at Ralon.
Brilliant.
This was the day that Alan first surprised Jon. Little did he know it wouldn’t be the last time.
