Title: Never Take Away
Rating: PG
Word Count: 402
Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan
Round/Fight: 1A
Summary: The possibility of being found out was always there. Alanna just didn’t want to think about what would happen on such a day. Inspired by lyrics from “Part of Me” by Katy Perry because apparently Katy is my Jon!tunes of choice.
The last shred of dignity that Alanna could muster with the dregs of her energy kept her head high and her eyes blazing even as she walked the last steps to the foot of the dais.
Her face felt frozen, her breathing shallow and her heart thudding painfully against the cage of her chest, but she put one foot in front of the other until Alanna could see the bright blue of Jonathan’s eyes from where he stood on his father’s right hand.
“Alanna of Trebond, you have disgraced the Crown with your deception. You have lied to your superiors, and sullied your family’s honor. You will be stripped of your shield, sword, and title.”
She didn’t flinch. Roald, for all that he was a king, did not deserve to see how much this tore at her very soul.
One consolation as Alanna left her shield by her feet, was the gleaming gold cat displayed proudly in place of the Trebond coat-of-arms. Thom had removed the spell, an ugly look on his face as he traced a hand over the unblemished surface.
Defiantly, Alanna looked from the Queen, then to the King before pausing and locking eyes with Jon.
She spun on her heel, then, and walked out of the Throne Room and out of the Palace.
Later, Jon hung onto Moonlight’s bridle as Alanna checked the straps on her gear once more.
“You don’t have to leave—“ he tried again, another variation on the argument they had been having since Jon had first found Alanna, surrounded by the contents of her closet, in the middle of the room that had been hers as his squire.
Alanna leaned her forehead against Moonlight’s neck, breathing in the musky horse smell. “I do.” She tilted her head to the side to look at him. “I can’t be myself here. I’m not wante—“
Jon caught Alanna up in his arms, silencing her abruptly before she could finish her sentence with his mouth on hers.
“I want you here,” he told her seriously. ”I want—“
“I know.” Alanna reached up and kissed him, chastely. “It isn’t you.”
Before she could second-guess herself, Alanna pulled away and up into the saddle.
A silence descended, broken only by Moonlight’s hooves on the packed dirt of the stable yard.
“Alanna—“ Jon’s hand squeezed her knee.
She swallowed around the lump in her throat. “Goodbye, Jon.”
