They lay in bed together, and in the gloom left by the extinguished lamps, Jon said, "Alanna?"
"Hmm?"
"Tell me about the third day."
An elbow dug into his side. "You're insatiable," Alanna complained.
"I would have thought you would have known that by now."
She elbowed him, harder this time, but nevertheless, Alanna took up the thread of her story where it had been left off. "Well, this time, I woke up early, in time to see Lord Byren off as he rode with some of his servants and knights to the hunt. And then, his lady sought me out as I was practising some of my exercises with my sword. She waited until I was done, and then we walked. This time, she drew me into the privacy of her bedroom and offered me three kisses."
"Three kisses?" Jon asked, incredulously.
Alanna rolled her eyes. "Yes," she said, "Three kisses. What's wrong?"
"Well, I mean, she just offered you one on the first day, two on the second, and three on the third day? Isn't that a little strange?"
"I wasn't really counting," Alanna said.
"You were just enjoying it."
She elbowed him again. "Oh, leave off about the enjoyment for a second, Jon, will you?"
"But you enjoyed it!" Jon crowed.
"She was a good kisser," Alanna admitted, and she was flaming, he could tell that, even in the dark, a bright scarlet that almost matched her curls. "Leave off already."
"Fine," he muttered. "Go on."
"Thank you, your Highness," Alanna said, mockingly. "Well, she offered me something else. A green ribbon she was wearing in her hair. She said--" she hesitated. "It sounds odd, I guess. But she said that the green ribbon had been enchanted a long time ago by a very powerful mage in her family. He was her great-great grandfather, or something like that, and he'd studied at the University of Carthak. He'd placed an enchantment on the ribbon so the wearer couldn't come to physical harm. She demonstrated it to me by cutting herself with a knife. It didn't leave a mark."
Jon frowned. "But how is that possible?" he murmured. He'd always wondered how she'd come back. He noticed she'd worn a green ribbon, laced into her left boot. Was that it?
"Oh, hush and listen. I'll explain it in a bit."
"Alright, alright. But I'm holding you to it."
"I was a little suspicious," Alanna went on, "And so I drew my dagger and asked permission to test it. She took the dagger from me and tried to slice her thumb. Nothing. It drew no blood. I was convinced, then, of the ribbon's power. I thanked her, and kept the ribbon by lacing it into my boot. When Lord Byren came back, I thought about it. The ribbon was magic, I knew, and powerful magic. Or so it seemed. And...I'd wanted to be a knight. You know that. I never really wanted to use my Gift, until I had to, and then I realised I enjoyed that too."
"My father never liked the Gift either," Jon said, quietly. "He watched the warmages during the time of my grandfather. I think that was what turned him away from the Gift, watching magic kill men by the tens and dozens. He was never quite the same after that."
Alanna gripped his hand, saying nothing. He drew her close, into a silent hug.
