It was a cool evening; Jon brought cups of spiced apple juice up to his study. Alanna accepted one with a murmur of thanks. "Tell me about the second day," he said, when they'd both settled in. Alanna surreptiously removed her booted feet from his table.
"Well," she said, "The lady came to me again on the second day. She was clad in a light green silk gown. I remember that gown, because it reminded me of Delia of Eldorne, for some strange reason. She didn't startle me this time; I was already awake when she entered my room. She said, 'Sir Knight, would you walk with me?' So I agreed. This time, we took a long route from the ramparts into her solar, where she showed me some of her needlework, and I feigned interest. We talked over cups of herbal tea, and then she gave me another two kisses--"
Jon whistled. Alanna glared at him.
"--Two kisses," she continued, "And slyly remarked, 'Why, Sir Knight, you do look particularly taken aback!' So she was having me on and enjoying it. In any case, she gave me as well a fine piece of needlework, depicting a snowy mountain valley. I was a little sorry to part with it, but Lord Byren returned in the evening, having brought down three hares. I wasn't about to drag three hares around with me, so they were cooked for dinner. 'Game is sparse this evening,' he remarked. 'I was hoping to bring down a stag, or even deer, such as on the first day of your visit. Come, will you not ride with me on the morrow?'"
"And you refused?"
"Yes," Alanna said. "I wanted to be well-rested, because in two days' time, I was going to ride to face the Green Knight. We would not fight, but of course I wanted to prepare for it all the same. So I refused him, and gave him the two kisses and the painting, at which point he remarked I'd somehow managed to collect a rather rich haul at the castle, and I was putting him to shame."
Jon almost roared with laughter. "The sly dog! He must have been in on it."
"Well, his wife certainly grinned and winked at him when he turned to her. He was in very high spirits that night; we both drank a little more than we should have. And then we went to bed."
"That's it?"
"Of course that was it," Alanna said. "What more were you expecting?"
"I don't know," Jon said, "What about something more exciting? Like fighting and killing a dragon, or a giant or something. Have you even heard the tales coming down to Corus from the North?"
Alanna made a face. "There aren't such things as unicorns, Jon."
He looked down at his feet. "Well," he muttered, "It would be kind of nice if there was..." Now he was the one who was a flaming scarlet, almost from head to toe.
Alanna said, "In any case, unicorns are drawn to virgins in legends, aren't they?"
"You--oh."
"Yes," she said, dryly, "Oh. I would have thought you'd have the courtesy to remember, Jon."
He spluttered; Alanna grinned wickedly. "Perhaps we should make sure of that?"
