Title: Oaks and Feathers Rating: G Word Count: 210 Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan Round/Fight: 1A Summary: An end and a beginning.
He found her sitting under the large oak tree, chin resting on her bent knees. She was a tiny thing, all curled up the way she was. Jon folded his legs and took a seat beside her. The oak provided some welcome shade, but the sun continued to stream far and wide around them.
Alanna, quietly ensconced in her own private solitude, didn't seem bothered by his sudden company. “What have you got there?” he asked, gesturing at the feather in her hands.
“It was my first quill. He – my father, that is – gave it to me when I wrote my name for the first time.” She twirled the quill a few times, reflective, before offering it to Jon for a closer look.
“It’s beautiful,” he said, admiringly. It was a deep white, edged in pure black, and almost as long as his arm. He could just imagine a younger Alanna using it, head bent eagerly over some parchment, grip steady and focused.
“It was one of the few things he actually loved.” There was no bitterness in her voice; simply sadness. When Jon returned the quill, she shrugged. “I only wish he’d gotten to know the real me.”
Jon nodded, sombre, and squeezed her shoulder. “One day, he will.”

This snapshot feels like a missing piece of the books--we never really did get an insight into how her father's death affected Alanna. I think this fits into the canon quite nicely, with both characters subtle in their responses, but there's still so much emotion contained here. It might be added into my headcanon....
