Title: A Single Tear
Rating: G
Word Count: 338
Pairing: Kalasin/ Kaddar
Round/Fight: 1/A
Summary:The birth of your first born feels different so far from home.
Kaddar looked down in awe at his precious new born son cradled gently in Kally’s arms. They – being his mother – had finally allowed him into the birthing chamber, and then only grudgingly. Apparently it wasn’t seemly for the emperor to be near such messy, womanly things as the birth of his heir. Now though Binur and his mother were freshly washed and wrapped in the finest sheets, or softest blankets in the baby’s case, that money could buy.
Kaddar watched as Kally gently ran a finger down the baby’s nose causing the boy to wiggle in a way that triggered an even wider smile on his father’s face. Kally looked up at him so much love shining in her eyes.
“I can’t believe how tiny he is!”
“But you have four younger brothers and sisters surely you’ve held new born babies before?” Kaddar sounded surprised. He on the other hand had never had anything to do with small children; another thing far too unseemly.
“Plenty of times,” she replied a shrug audible in her voice, “but they were never my baby.”
“Our baby”, Kaddar interrupted, causing a small laugh to break from Kalasin.
“Our baby,” she corrected, “what I mean is how anyone so tiny can become someone so important?”
“Well I feel he is already rather important,” lovingly stoking the baby’s curled fist. “But you were once this tiny held in your mother’s arms and look what you’ve become my Lady Empress.”
They sat together in silence soaking in the beauty of their child until a small sigh slipped from his wife’s lips, and when he looked he was alarmed to see a single tear running down her cheek.
“She’ll never meet him” Kally stated simply.
Kaddar reached to wipe the tear away, “I’ll commission a portrait of the two of you to send to Corus, and we’ll tell him every story of your home possible. I know it doesn’t fix it, but we’ll never let him forget he’s as much Tortallan as he is a Cathaki.”
